Melissa Abreu, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
NY
Welcome! My name is Melissa Abreu, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with six years of clinical experience in New York. I work with children, adults (ages 18-64), couples, and families from diverse backgrounds. I am particularly passionate about supporting young adults and adults who are navigating life transitions, relationship challenges, self-esteem concerns, career stress, and questions related to identity and personal growth. I also enjoy helping individuals who struggle with anxious attachment, boundary-setting, and the impact of relational or family dynamics on their well-being. Some of the primary concerns I treat include relationship issues, anxiety, life transitions, trauma, and identity and self-esteem concerns. My approach is person-centered and holistic. I prioritize creating a safe, supportive, and collaborative space where clients feel deeply understood within the context of their unique story, experiences, and personal identity. Together, we explore your hopes and goals for therapy, working to uncover and integrate your most authentic self so that our work supports meaningful growth, greater self-awareness, stronger relationships, and lasting healing. I draw from several evidence-based approaches to tailor treatment to each client’s unique needs, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Gottman Method Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy.

My approach is person-centered and holistic, and I believe therapy should be tailored to your unique experiences, identity, and goals. Together, we'll work to build self-awareness, strengthen relationships, and support meaningful, lasting growth.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work begins by exploring your story, identifying your goals, and understanding the challenges you're facing.
