Melissa Abreu, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
NY
Hi, I'm Melissa, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who works with children, adolescents, and adults from diverse backgrounds. I'm particularly passionate about supporting young adults and adults navigating life transitions, relationship challenges, self-esteem concerns, career stress, and questions of identity and personal growth. I also enjoy helping people who struggle with anxious attachment, boundary-setting, trauma, and the impact of family or relational dynamics on their well-being. My priority is creating a safe, collaborative space where you feel deeply understood within the context of your own story. My approach is person-centered and holistic. I draw from evidence-based practices including ACT, CBT, DBT, the Gottman Method, and others, tailoring our work to your unique story rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method. Together, we explore your hopes and goals for therapy so our work supports meaningful growth and greater self-awareness. I hold a Master's degree from Alliance University and bring six years of clinical experience in New York. I also offer sessions in Spanish. Therapy is a space to uncover and integrate your most authentic self. If you're ready to take that first step, I'd love to connect.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I strive to create a safe, supportive, and collaborative space where you feel understood, valued, and accepted. My approach is person-centered and holistic, and I believe therapy should be tailored to your unique experiences, identity, and goals. Together, we'll work to build self-awareness, strengthen relationships, and support meaningful, lasting growth.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work begins by exploring your story, identifying your goals, and understanding the challenges you're facing. From there, I create an individualized treatment plan using evidence-based approaches such as ACT, CBT, DBT, Gottman Method Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy. Throughout the process, we'll work collaboratively to develop practical skills, deepen self-understanding, and create lasting positive change.
