Melissa Davis, PMHNP

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
4904 Professional Ct, Raleigh, NC
My name is Melissa “Misa” Davis, PMHNP-BC, and I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I earned my Master of Science in Nursing from Duke University School of Nursing, where I graduated with honors, and completed a postgraduate psychiatric nurse practitioner residency through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, I spent more than 10 years working in critical care nursing, including the ICU, Emergency Department, and psychiatric emergency care. Those experiences taught me a lot about caring for people during vulnerable and difficult moments and ultimately strengthened my interest in psychiatry. I particularly enjoy working with people experiencing substance use disorders, mood disorders, PTSD, anxiety, insomnia, and thought disorders. My VA training also gave me experience working with veterans, and I enjoy providing affirming care to LGBTQIA+ individuals. My approach combines medication management with a broader look at the things influencing someone’s mental health. Depending on the person, that may include lifestyle changes and strategies informed by Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Outside of work, I’m happiest outdoors. I love rock climbing, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, camping, hiking, and paddleboarding. I also enjoy painting, reading, spending time with my husband and daughter, and taking care of our rather large collection of animals.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I want you to feel like you can show up as yourself when we meet. I approach people with genuine curiosity and acceptance, and I spend time getting to know you before deciding what treatment should look like. I’m interested in what you’re struggling with, but I also want to know what matters to you. What do you enjoy? What would you like to change? What would a fulfilling life look like for you? I see our work as collaborative. I’ll bring my clinical experience and knowledge of psychiatric treatment, and I want you to bring your own experience, priorities, and questions. Wherever you are when you first come in is a perfectly good place for us to start.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first appointment starts with getting to know you and understanding what brought you in. We’ll talk about your mental health history, current symptoms, daily life, previous treatment experiences, and what has or hasn’t worked for you. I’ll also ask about your priorities and goals because I want our treatment plan to reflect what you want to improve in your life. From there, we’ll develop a plan together. Depending on your needs, that may include medication management, lifestyle changes, therapy recommendations, and techniques informed by CBT, ACT, or Motivational Interviewing. During follow-up appointments, we’ll talk about what’s working, what isn’t, and how things are changing. We can adjust the plan as we go so that your treatment continues to make sense for you.
