Getting to know Dr. Melissa Jermann
Dr. Melissa Jermann is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (Authorized to Practice Telehealth in 41 States) specializing in OCD, anxiety, and trauma. Dr. Jermann is uniquely interested in working with perfectionism and how it relates to these concerns. She also has extensive experience working with various disorders, such as depression, relationship concerns, life transitions, insomnia, adjustment disorder, chronic pain, and personality disorders. Dr. Jermann works with children, teens, adults, and couples.
Dr. Jermann graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, minoring in Counseling Psychology from the University of Albany. After graduation, she volunteered at the NYU Family Trauma Program before starting her doctorate. Throughout her graduate school training at Fairleigh Dickinson University, she has worked in hospital and private practice settings and completed her 5th-year predoctoral internship at the New Jersey VA Hospital. Dr. Jermann received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 2021. She then returned to the Center of Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy to complete her postdoctoral training under the mentorship and supervision of OCD Specialist Dr. Steven Phillipson, completed in July 2022. Dr. Jermann continues to work part-time at the center and supervises Ph.D. students.

Many clients have described my style as direct, warm, humorous, and authentic. Each person is unique; therefore, I tailor my approach to fit the client's needs and goals!
What is your typical process for working with clients?
Dr. Jermann’s primary therapeutic orientation relies heavily on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on willingness, mindfulness, values, and acceptance of internal experiences. She also will incorporate other modern evidence-based treatments, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Dr. Jermann is also trained in specialized treatments, including Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE) for PTSD, as well as ACT for Chronic Pain and CBT-Insomnia. Dr. Jermann’s treatment approach typically begins with goal setting, psychoeducation, and skill development, followed by further insight to facilitate self-exploration, understanding, and growth.

My time with Melissa was amazing! She really understood the issues I was dealing with, and gave me treatment that was well-suited to those issues. It was so helpful having a therapist who was experienced with OCD, but also had tools for other mental health problems. I found her to be incredibly easy to talk to/down to earth, and had all the clinical know-how to provide high quality care. I would highly recommend anyone going to Melissa for treatment.

Dr. Melissa is a skillful OCD therapist--she is easy to talk to, and approaches treatment with a sweet balance of empathy and humor. She was able to help me move through ERP treatment for some challenging and stigmatizing OCD themes as well as navigate the ways OCD shows up interpersonally/relationally. I would totally recommend working with her.

Melissa helped me get through years of pent up Perfectionism, Anxiety, and Depression. I saw her for about a year and we went through CBT/DBT practices. As always, working on yourself is a process but through Melissa, I was able to gain and develop the necessary skills to deal with my issues.

Melissa is an incredibly attentive therapist that pays attention to the most important details. She'll both laugh with you and challenge you when you most need it. Therapy with Melissa offered such a fresh perspective, and I would highly recommend her!

Melissa was a lifesaver! She helped me when I was having terrible ocd along with self-steem issues. I am not the same person I was before meeting her. I felt like I was weak and not strong enough to overcome not just ocd, but life itself. I no longer have those ocd fears and my self-steem has improved so much. Melissa is more than a therapist, she became a FRIEND! She is awesome!

Melissa was a lifesaver! I was suffering from terrible ocd, along with self-steem issues. I am not the same person after her. I no longer suffer with those terrible fears and my self-steem has improved for the better in so many ways. She is more than a therapist, she became MY FRIEND,. I trust her and she made me feel safe and she had my back when I felt like I wasn't going to make it. trust me , she is amazing.

My experience with Melissa has been fantastic. Dealing with OCD has always be a struggle for me but Melissa and I worked together to strategically tackle the issues I was dealing with. I highly recommend Melissa for anyone struggling and is willing to put in the work in order to live a life where OCD no longer runs their life.

Melissa was highly skilled and empowered me to give me the tools in order to manage Anxiety and OCD in our sessions together. Melissa employed the therapeutic method of ACT and ERP in sessions. As a result, it has transformed my life and has enabled me to become empowered and live my life as I choose to. Melissa’s warm, humorous and friendly approach as a clinician is a huge asset of hers. Melissa also instils discipline, leading to long lasting results. Melissa’s approach made me feel comfortable and find humour in issues that at first I found distressing.
As a result of working with Melissa, my life has changed for the better. The relationship with the content my brain throws, I now deem completely irrelevant, or brain junk. My self confidence has improved, my willingness to tackle situations I may have found difficult in the past has increased hugely.
Melissa, really is an asset to the psychological world and I can not speak highly enough of her approach and her work.

My daughter was a client of Dr. Jermann for two years. Dr. Jermann is a true miracle in our lives. She was able to connect with my daughter in a way no other provider had ever been able to do. She was able to teach my daughter the coping mechanisms and skills she needed to recognize and face her difficulties and become well. She has always been incredibly professional, knowledgeable, skillful, kind, patient, purposeful, informative, honest, and direct in her treatment and in her interactions with me as a parent. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Jermann without reservation, and I would return to her as a provider without hesitation if needed in the future.

As I set out to explore therapy to help manage my anxiety and compulsions, Dr. Jermann's welcoming, empathetic, and informative style made me feel safe, comfortable, motivated, and informed to take on this opportunity to grow. I often found myself lost and confused in thought, overthinking the simplest decisions. Now, I feel the tools and knowledge Dr. Jermann has shared with me have made me better equipped to tackle those situations. I find myself more at ease and I can break out of my comfort zone more often. I'd also like to highlight how Dr. Jermann has accommodated my busy professional schedule as long as I provide advanced notice.
