Getting to know Melissa Riggins

Hello! I'm Melissa Riggins, and I am so glad you're here! I hold a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from National University and am fully licensed in both Colorado and Nevada. I work with individuals and couples presenting for a variety of reasons, ranging from mood disorders and self-esteem to relational issues and infidelity. I am passionate about helping each of my clients meet their full potential and make their life dreams come true. My ideal client is someone interested in making a change to create more meaningful connections within their lives and relationships, both internally and externally. What should a new client know about working with you?

I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is a psychological intervention that teaches individuals how to cope with unhelpful or distorted thoughts, feelings and actions; and Gottman Couples Therapy, which is a couples therapy intervention focused on helping partners enhance their relationship quality and help make life dreams come true. As a person-centered therapist, I genuinely care about each of my clients and their unique stories and experiences. I strive to provide a safe and welcoming space for all clients to explore their presenting concerns and create pathways for meaningful connections.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session together, I will spend time gathering history regarding what is bringing you in to therapy, the impact it is having on your life, as well as additional family and relevant history. This helps me start conceptualizing your identified issue and consider a possible diagnosis. During our initial session, we will begin to explore your goals for therapy and start the creation of your treatment plan. In each subsequent session, we will actively work towards aspects of your treatment plan to best support you in achieving your goals. I will provide you with various interventions and skills throughout the therapy process and I will assign 'homework' for you to practice these skills outside of session. I believe that each intervention or skill I provide is an opportunity to learn and grow for both of us, so working together will continue to be a collaborative process throughout.
