Getting to know Melissa Slack

If you're reading this, you're probably doing what I would do too—carefully comparing providers and wondering who feels like the right fit. I'm Melissa Slack, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and founder of EVERVERA. Before opening my private practice, I spent more than two decades caring for patients as a nurse, including serving as a United States Navy Nurse. Those years taught me something I still carry into every appointment: people want to feel understood before they want to be treated. That's why I created EVERVERA. I wanted psychiatric care to feel different—thoughtful rather than rushed, comfortable enough for honest questions, and collaborative enough that you understand not only what I recommend, but why. I provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and medication management for eligible patients ages 8 and older experiencing concerns such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, and sleep difficulties. I don't assume medication is the answer simply because you've come to a psychiatric provider. We'll first understand what's happening, then consider what makes sense for you. EVERVERA is a private-pay telehealth practice serving patients throughout North Carolina. Superbills are available upon request for possible out-of-network reimbursement. You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what's wrong or what you need. That's something we can figure out together. And whether you choose me or another provider, I hope you find someone who makes you feel heard.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Maybe you've been thinking about making an appointment for months. Maybe someone you love has been encouraging you. Maybe you're here because something that used to be manageable suddenly isn't. You don't have to sort all of that out before we meet. Come as you are, with whatever you know so far. We'll take it from there. I'll want to hear what has been happening, but I'll also want to know about you beyond the symptoms—what your days look like, what's changed, what you've tried, what you're worried about, and what you hope could be different. I won't make decisions about your care without explaining my thinking. If medication makes sense, we'll talk about why. If there are reasons to wait, reconsider, or take another direction, we'll talk about those too. You can disagree with me. You can be unsure. You can ask the same question twice. There isn't a perfect way to be a patient here. There is simply a conversation, some careful clinical thinking, and a decision about where we go next.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I don't expect to understand you in the first five minutes. The first appointment gives us time to look at the whole picture. We'll talk about what's happening now, but we'll also go backward a little—your health, medications, previous treatment, family history, sleep, significant experiences, and the patterns that may help explain how you arrived here. Some things will matter. Some won't. Part of my job is knowing the difference. Before we finish, I'll tell you what I'm seeing clinically. I'll explain what seems clear, what may still need sorting out, and what I think makes sense from here. If medication is part of that recommendation, you'll understand why we're considering it and what we'll be watching for. If something else needs attention first, we'll address that instead. And then we keep paying attention. At follow-up visits, I don't just want to know whether you're taking the medication. I want to know whether your mornings are different. Whether you're sleeping. Whether work or school feels more manageable. Whether the people who know you best are noticing anything. Because ultimately, we're not treating numbers on a questionnaire. We're trying to understand whether your life is getting better.

A quick word about money, because you shouldn't have to search for the fine print. EVERVERA is private pay and does not bill insurance. HSA/FSA cards are accepted, and if you have out-of-network benefits, I can provide a detailed superbill upon request that you may submit for possible reimbursement. Your insurance company determines whether and how much it reimburses, so reimbursement can't be guaranteed. Why private pay? Because I wanted to build my practice around the clinical relationship rather than the requirements of an insurance contract. That doesn't mean private pay is better for everyone. It isn't. Cost matters, and choosing where to spend your healthcare dollars is personal. If you decide EVERVERA is worth that investment, I want you to know what you're paying for: my time, attention, preparation, clinical judgment, and continuity—not simply the minutes we spend together on a screen.

    very supportive, professional and caring.
I don't usually leave reviews, but I felt like I needed to for anyone who's searching for the right provider. What meant the most to me was that she truly listened. She didn't rush me, interrupt me, or make me feel like I was just another appointment on her schedule. She took the time to understand my story, explained everything in a way that actually made sense, and included me in every decision about my care. I hope you'll give Melissa a chance. She is kind, thoughtful, incredibly knowledgeable, and treats you with so much respect and compassion. I'm truly grateful I found her.
I was honestly nervous about meeting with a new psychiatric provider, but Melissa made me feel comfortable within the first few minutes. She listened without interrupting, asked thoughtful questions, and never made me feel judged. I didn’t feel rushed, and for the first time in a long time I felt like someone actually wanted to understand what I was experiencing instead of just checking boxes. I left with a treatment plan that made sense and feeling hopeful about what’s ahead.
Excellent experience from start to finish. The appointment was organized, professional, and personalized. Melissa took time to understand my history before discussing treatment options. I appreciated that she explained both the benefits and possible side effects of medication so I could make an informed decision. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone looking for psychiatric care.
I had such a positive experience with Melissa. From the moment I scheduled my appointment, everything was simple and organized. The telehealth visit was easy to join, started on time, and I immediately felt comfortable. Melissa took the time to really listen to what I had been experiencing without making me feel rushed or judged. She asked thoughtful questions, explained my diagnosis and treatment options in a way that was easy to understand, and made sure I felt comfortable with the plan before we finished. What stood out most was how personalized the appointment felt. I never felt like I was just another patient. I felt heard, respected, and genuinely cared for. I left the appointment with a much better understanding of my mental health and felt hopeful about moving forward. If you’re looking for a compassionate, knowledgeable psychiatric provider who truly takes the time to listen, I highly recommend Melissa. It was one of the best healthcare experiences I’ve had.
Melissa is everything I was hoping to find in a psychiatric provider. She is kind, patient, and very thorough. I never once felt rushed, and she made sure all of my questions were answered before the visit ended. It’s clear that she genuinely cares about her patients, and that made all the difference for me.
I’ve seen a few providers over the years, and this was by far the best experience I’ve had. Melissa explained everything in a way that was easy to understand and took the time to answer every question I had. I appreciated that she didn’t jump to conclusions and instead took a thorough approach before making recommendations. I left feeling confident that I was finally getting the right care.
