She didn't rush me, interrupt me, or make me feel like I was just another appointment on her schedule. She took the time to understand my story, explained everything in a way that actually made sense, and included me in every decision about my care. I hope you'll give Melissa a chance. Getting to know Melissa Slack

If you're reading this, you're probably doing what I would do too—carefully comparing providers and wondering who feels like the right fit. I know finding the right psychiatric provider can feel overwhelming. My hope is that after reading my profile, you'll have a sense not only of my experience, but of the kind of care you can expect from me. I'm Melissa Slack, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and founder of EVERVERA. Before opening my private practice, I spent more than two decades caring for patients as a nurse, including serving as a United States Navy Nurse. Throughout those years, I learned that people want to feel understood before they want to be treated. That belief inspired me to create EVERVERA. I wanted to build a practice where appointments are thoughtful rather than rushed, questions are welcomed, and treatment decisions are made together. Every treatment plan is individualized because no two people have the same experiences, goals, or circumstances. I provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and medication management for adolescents and adults experiencing ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, insomnia, and other mental health conditions. I believe treatment should fit the person—not the other way around—and that may include medication, non-medication strategies, or an integrative approach when clinically appropriate. EVERVERA is a private-pay telehealth practice serving patients throughout North Carolina. Superbills are available for patients with out-of-network insurance benefits who wish to seek possible reimbursement. Whether you choose me or another provider, I hope you find someone who makes you feel heard. If you decide that person might be me, I'd be honored to care for you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

One of the things I never want a patient to feel is rushed. Our first appointment isn't about checking boxes or quickly deciding on a medication. It's about getting to know you. I want to understand what's been happening, how your symptoms are affecting your life, what's worked, what hasn't, and what you're hoping will be different. If medication is appropriate, I'll explain why I'm recommending it, what benefits you can realistically expect, possible side effects, and answer every question before we make decisions together. If medication isn't the right fit for you—or if you prefer to explore non-medication or integrative treatment strategies first—we'll discuss evidence-informed options that align with your goals whenever clinically appropriate. You don't need to know exactly how to explain what you're feeling before your appointment. That's my job—to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and help us make sense of it together. I believe the best treatment decisions happen when patients feel comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns, and actively participating in their care. My role is to provide guidance, education, and support so you can make informed decisions with confidence. My hope is that you'll leave every appointment feeling heard, respected, and with a clear understanding of the plan moving forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first appointment is designed to understand the whole picture—not simply your symptoms. We'll talk about what's bringing you in, your medical and mental health history, previous treatments, medications, sleep, stress, family history, daily life, and the goals you hope to achieve. Every question has a purpose, and every conversation helps us build a treatment plan that fits you rather than a diagnosis alone. If medication is recommended, we'll review the reasons together, discuss expected benefits, possible side effects, and how we'll monitor your progress. You'll always understand your options before making any decisions. If medication isn't the right fit for you—or if you prefer a non-medication or integrative approach—we'll discuss evidence-informed alternatives whenever they're clinically appropriate. Follow-up appointments focus on how you're doing, what's improving, what's still challenging, and whether adjustments are needed. Mental health treatment isn't static, and your care shouldn't be either. Whether we're meeting for the first time or continuing your care, my commitment remains the same: to provide thoughtful, evidence-based psychiatric care in a place where you feel respected, understood, and supported.

EVERVERA is a private-pay telehealth practice serving patients throughout North Carolina. If you're considering private-pay care for the first time, I don't want concerns about insurance to keep you from finding the care you deserve. If you have out-of-network benefits, I'm happy to provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Because every insurance plan is different, reimbursement cannot be guaranteed. Many people ask why I chose to build EVERVERA as a private-pay practice. The answer is simple: I wanted the freedom to spend my time focusing on people—not paperwork. A private-pay practice allows me to provide thoughtful, individualized psychiatric care without many of the limitations that can come with insurance-based treatment. Instead of fitting your care into predetermined requirements, we can focus on understanding your concerns, exploring your options, and creating a treatment plan that feels right for you. Whether that includes medication, a more holistic approach when appropriate, lifestyle recommendations, or simply taking the time to understand what you're experiencing, my goal is always the same—to help you feel heard, respected, and supported while receiving care that is grounded in both compassion and evidence.
