“Being in an interracial relationship, we needed a therapist who could understand complex identity layers and cultural expectations. Mengdan created a space where both of us felt validated. She also helped us spot how our learned behaviors were clashing—and gave us tools to shift those habits consciously.”

Getting to know Mengdan Chen

***At the moment this therapist is not accepting medicaid insurance. Please see accepted insurance as well as out of pocket fees below*** As a couples therapist, I specialize in helping partners who feel distant, stuck in recurring conflicts, or uncertain about the future of their relationship. Whether you're navigating a crisis or feeling the slow drift of disconnection, my goal is to provide a safe and supportive space where both partners feel heard and understood. I believe that every relationship carries the potential for healing and deeper connection, even when things feel overwhelming or unclear.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is grounded in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), helping partners understand and transform the emotional patterns that drive conflict and disconnection. I also integrate elements of Attachment Theory and psychodynamic therapy to explore how past experiences shape present-day relationship dynamics. Through a collaborative process, we move beyond surface-level disagreements to uncover the deeper emotional needs and vulnerabilities that often go unspoken—creating space for greater understanding, connection, and trust.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our work together, I support you in developing healthier communication, rebuilding emotional safety, and reconnecting in ways that feel authentic and lasting. I view therapy as both a place of reflection and action—a chance to understand your relationship more deeply while also practicing new ways of relating. Whether you're in crisis or simply wanting more closeness, therapy can be a powerful step toward a more resilient, connected partnership.

Mengdan doesn’t just help couples—she also works wonders one-on-one. Her insight helped me work through past trauma that was affecting my current relationship. I’m beginning to be more self-aware and open now, thanks to her.
Being in an interracial relationship, we needed a therapist who could understand complex identity layers and cultural expectations. Mengdan created a space where both of us felt validated. She also helped us spot how our learned behaviors were clashing—and gave us tools to shift those habits consciously.
Mengdan combines deep empathy with actionable strategies. I appreciated how she helped us turn abstract problems into concrete steps. Our relationship feels like its starting to make sense.
One of Mengdan’s greatest strengths is how she gently but clearly points out patterns that aren’t working—and helps you understand why they exist. With her guidance, my husband and I were able to stop reacting out of old wounds and start relating in healthier ways. She connected the dots we couldn’t see ourselves.
We came in thinking we had ‘communication issues’—but Mengdan helped us realize how much of it stemmed from unspoken beliefs and childhood dynamics. She has a sharp eye for emotional patterns, and the way she helps you untangle them is nothing short of masterful.
Working with Mengdan felt like holding up a mirror—in the best way. She helped us see our repetitive cycles of shutting down, blaming, and avoiding real issues. Her cultural humility and direct, thoughtful style helped us feel safe enough to finally be honest—with ourselves and each other.
Mengdan has been a guiding light in our marriage. Her ability to listen without judgment and offer insightful feedback helped us rebuild trust and communication. We’re so grateful for her support and professionalism.
Mengdan’s understanding of cultural expectations—especially around gender roles, family loyalty, and emotional expression—was a breath of fresh air. She helped me unpack inherited patterns that were keeping me stuck, without ever shaming or oversimplifying. Her insight is both deep and respectful.
Our family was going through a rough transition after a big move, and Mengdan helped all of us—especially our teenage daughter—feel heard and understood. She brings warmth and structure to every session. A true gem!
As a first-generation immigrant, I was nervous about starting therapy. But Mengdan made me feel seen and respected from day one. She understood the cultural dynamics in my family and helped us navigate generational tension with compassion and clarity. I never felt like I had to explain or justify my experience—she just got it.
