Getting to know Micaela Pericone-Kapp

Hello! I'm Micaela Pericone-Kapp, a Doctor of Nursing Practice specializing as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I bring over six years of nursing experience from critical care, ICU, and emergency departments—experiences that taught me to see healthcare through a lens of both compassion and clinical expertise. My healthcare journey began as a float nurse at Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, where I quickly learned to adapt to diverse patient needs and sharpen my assessment skills. Working in those fast-paced environments showed me something important: physical and mental health are deeply connected. That understanding shapes how I care for you—I look at the whole picture, not just isolated symptoms. I completed my doctoral training at the University of Massachusetts Global with 765 clinical hours dedicated to psychiatric mental health. My approach is rooted in building authentic, therapeutic relationships. I believe healing happens in a safe, non-judgmental space where you feel truly heard and understood—and that's exactly what I strive to create for every person I work with. What I value most is collaborative care. Throughout my career, I've seen how powerful it is when we work together—you, me, your loved ones, and your other healthcare providers—all moving toward the same goal: your wellness. I'm especially passionate about helping you develop insight into your mental health and empowering you to take an active role in your own recovery. You're the expert on your life; I'm here to walk alongside you. My time working with patients in life-threatening situations taught me to stay calm under pressure while never losing sight of empathy and compassion. I'm certified in BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS, reflecting my commitment to your safety and comprehensive care. I look forward to being part of your journey toward wellness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Choosing me means receiving psychiatric medication management that values both a strong therapeutic relationship and clinical excellence. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, my practice is grounded in the belief that effective medication management starts with genuinely listening. During our first session, I'll gather a thorough psychiatric and medical history — but I also want to know you as a person: your priorities, daily experiences, relationships, and what matters most in your life. This complete picture shapes my recommendations and ensures treatment enhances your life rather than adding burden. I provide evidence-based care while deeply respecting your personal insight into your own mental health. If you've had difficult experiences with psychiatric medications in the past, I'll work carefully to understand what didn't work and how we can approach things differently. I bring fresh clinical perspective and thoughtful problem-solving for situations where finding the right treatment has felt out of reach. My prescribing approach is careful and intentional — typically starting at conservative doses when appropriate and making gradual adjustments based on your response. I'm thorough about reviewing potential side effects, diligent in monitoring them, and responsive when something isn't working. Treatment decisions are always made collaboratively, with your feedback guiding our direction. Between appointments, I stay accessible for medication-related questions or concerns. I also place great emphasis on patient education — explaining how medications work in clear, straightforward terms, what improvements to expect and over what timeframe, and which symptoms warrant reaching out sooner. Whether you're managing depression, anxiety, ADHD, mood disorders, or other psychiatric conditions, I'm dedicated to supporting you with clinical expertise, genuine empathy, and consistent, devoted care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process is grounded in comprehensive assessment, transparent communication, and building a treatment plan that genuinely fits your life. I invest time in understanding not just your symptoms, but you as a whole person — because those two things are never quite the same. Your initial appointment, generally 60 minutes, is dedicated to a thorough evaluation. I'll ask about your current symptoms, when they first appeared, and how they're shaping your daily life. We'll review your complete mental health and medical history, including medications you've tried and what helped or fell short. Family history is part of the conversation too, since genetics can play a meaningful role in mental health. We'll also explore lifestyle factors — sleep patterns, stress levels, substance use, and recent life changes — all of which can significantly influence how well treatment works. Patient education is a priority throughout our work together. After gathering that information, I'll share my clinical impressions and explain any diagnoses in plain, accessible language. We'll discuss medication options openly: anticipated benefits, possible side effects, realistic timelines for improvement, and what to monitor along the way. My goal is for you to feel completely informed and genuinely confident about any treatment we pursue — not just willing to try it. Follow-up visits, typically 20 to 30 minutes, focus on tracking how you're responding. We'll talk through what's improving, any side effects you're experiencing, and whether adjustments are warranted. Medication management rarely comes together perfectly on the first try, and I stay flexible and attentive to your feedback throughout. If something isn't working, we change course — without hesitation. I remain accessible between visits through secure messaging for questions or concerns, and I coordinate with therapists when clients are also receiving counseling.

I would unfortunately not recommend Micaela if you are looking for someone with warm bedside manner. She very much came off as being on auto-pilot, and as she reiterated was reading of her prompts. She immediately wanted me to give in detail information about traumatic periods, and it was in no way a trauma informed questionnaire. I recommend she take classes in becoming more trauma informed and work on her bedside manner when asking amount trauma.
