Getting to know Micaela Pericone-Kapp

Hello! I'm Micaela Pericone-Kapp, a Doctor of Nursing Practice specializing as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I bring over six years of nursing experience from critical care, ICU, and emergency departments—experiences that taught me to see healthcare through a lens of both compassion and clinical expertise. My healthcare journey began as a float nurse at Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, where I quickly learned to adapt to diverse patient needs and sharpen my assessment skills. Working in those fast-paced environments showed me something important: physical and mental health are deeply connected. That understanding shapes how I care for you—I look at the whole picture, not just isolated symptoms. I completed my doctoral training at the University of Massachusetts Global with 765 clinical hours dedicated to psychiatric mental health. My approach is rooted in building authentic, therapeutic relationships. I believe healing happens in a safe, non-judgmental space where you feel truly heard and understood—and that's exactly what I strive to create for every person I work with. What I value most is collaborative care. Throughout my career, I've seen how powerful it is when we work together—you, me, your loved ones, and your other healthcare providers—all moving toward the same goal: your wellness. I'm especially passionate about helping you develop insight into your mental health and empowering you to take an active role in your own recovery. You're the expert on your life; I'm here to walk alongside you. My time working with patients in life-threatening situations taught me to stay calm under pressure while never losing sight of empathy and compassion. I'm certified in BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS, reflecting my commitment to your safety and comprehensive care. I look forward to being part of your journey toward wellness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Choosing to work with me means receiving psychiatric medication management that values both a strong therapeutic relationship and clinical excellence in equal measure. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, my practice is grounded in the belief that effective medication management starts with genuinely listening to and understanding each person I serve. During our first session, I gather a thorough psychiatric and medical history—and I also want to know you as a complete person: your priorities, daily experiences, relationships, responsibilities, and what matters most in your life and well-being. This complete understanding allows me to develop treatment plans that truly fit your unique circumstances and goals. If you have had difficult or disappointing experiences with psychiatric medications in the past, I will work carefully and sensitively to understand what did not work and how we can approach things differently this time. My prescribing approach is careful, measured, and intentional—typically starting at conservative doses when clinically appropriate and making gradual adjustments based on your individual response and feedback. I am thorough and proactive about reviewing potential side effects before starting any medication, diligent in monitoring them throughout treatment, and responsive when something is not working as hoped or causing problems. Treatment decisions are always made collaboratively, with your input and preferences shaping our path forward together. Between scheduled appointments, I remain accessible and available for medication-related questions, concerns, or unexpected developments that need attention. Whether you are managing depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, mood disorders, or other psychiatric conditions, my goal is to provide compassionate, expert care that helps you achieve meaningful symptom relief and improved quality of life tailored to your journey.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process is grounded in thorough assessment, transparent communication, and building a treatment plan that genuinely fits your life and circumstances. Your first appointment, usually 60 to 90 minutes, is devoted to building a complete picture of your mental health and well-being. I'll ask about your current symptoms, when they first appeared, and how they're shaping your daily life, relationships, work, sleep, and overall functioning. We'll review your full mental health and medical history, including medications you've tried and what helped or fell short, previous therapy experiences, and what you learned from past treatment. Once I've gathered that information, I'll share my clinical impressions and explain any diagnoses in plain, accessible language, without the jargon. We'll discuss medication options openly and honestly: the benefits anticipated from the evidence and your specific symptoms, possible side effects to watch for, realistic timelines for improvement so you know what to expect, and the signs of progress to look for along the way. Follow-up visits, typically 20 to 30 minutes, focus on tracking how you're responding to treatment and adjusting as needed. We'll talk through what's improving, what symptoms remain or have changed, any side effects and how bothersome they are, and whether adjustments make sense based on your feedback. These appointments are scheduled around your needs—more often when starting new medications or making changes, then usually monthly once you're stable and responding well. I stay accessible between visits through secure messaging for any questions or concerns that come up. Together, we'll work toward meaningful, lasting improvement in your symptoms and quality of life, with steady dedication, compassion, and clinical excellence supporting you every step of the way toward recovery, stability, and renewed hope. Above all, I want you to feel like a genuine partner in your care, supported and understood at every step.

I would unfortunately not recommend Micaela if you are looking for someone with warm bedside manner. She very much came off as being on auto-pilot, and as she reiterated was reading of her prompts. She immediately wanted me to give in detail information about traumatic periods, and it was in no way a trauma informed questionnaire. I recommend she take classes in becoming more trauma informed and work on her bedside manner when asking amount trauma.
