About Dr. Michael Cohen
I remember the moment I decided to become a chiropractor. During my junior year of college, I started experiencing crippling bouts of vertigo. They were so severe that I considered dropping out to focus on my health. I visited every doctor I could, but no one had an answer. I underwent countless tests-auditory and vestibular system checks, MRIs, blood work-all of which came back normal. I even wondered if it was all in my head and that I might be suffering from anxiety or panic attacks.
My last-ditch effort was to see a chiropractor. Through functional testing with Dr. Kevin Wilkins at First State, I discovered that my unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, absence of mindfulness, and spinal misalignments were the culprits behind my vertigo. Essentially, my body was out of balance and unable to achieve homeostasis. I vividly remember the profound experience a few weeks into the treatment plan when the frequency of my vertigo episodes began to decrease. At that moment, I knew what I wanted to do with my life: give back to my community the way chiropractic had given my life back to me.
Little did I know then, but Dr. Wilkins had introduced me to Applied Kinesiology, a technique that evaluates structural, chemical, and mental aspects of health by testing muscles for strength and weakness. Combined with visceral adjustments of the GI tract, we unraveled my symptoms and allowed my body to resume optimal functioning. This was a complete paradigm shift in my approach to health and medicine. Instead of relying on medication when physical or psychological symptoms arise, we should focus on lifestyle changes to prevent disease. Treat the body as a whole, and it will heal itself. The body knows better than we do.
I earned my Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic, where I deepened my understanding of holistic health and the body's innate ability to heal.
