More about Dr. Michael Godzala III, MD
Dr. Godzala has never given in to obstacles. “I was born with rheumatoid arthritis and my dad worked in radiology. So, I was frequently in the hospital for some reason and I guess I always wanted to be a doctor,” he remembers.
His decision to focus on psychiatry took more time, but a clinical rotation in psychiatry at the University of Buffalo convinced him to focus on mental health. Now, he credits his own challenges for giving him more insight into helping patients, acknowledging that “I know first-hand the emotional aspects of pain that medical conditions can put on you.”
A son of Western New York, Dr. Godzala was born in Buffalo, where he, his parents, and three siblings all still live. He received a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the State University at Buffalo before earning a master’s in biotechnology. His formal medical training and residency in psychiatry both took place at SUNY Buffalo’s school of medicine.
He is currently a consulting psychiatrist at Evergreen Health Services in Buffalo where he plays a leadership role, also seeing patients on his own. Dr. Godzala treats adult patients with almost any diagnosis, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD, and common anxiety.
In his spare time, Dr. Godzala enjoys a variety of hobbies that include tennis, pickleball, ballroom dancing, basketball, volleyball, and skiing–all of which help him focus on battling his RA through exercise.
