Michael Hickey, APRN, NP, MSN, PMHNP-BC

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
NY
I’m a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner providing medication management and/or psychotherapy for adults with anxiety/ panic, depression, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD), OCD, anger and irritability, and burnout. I work with people who want clear, consistent psychiatric care, not rushed visits or vague plans. Many of my patients are men and professionals who want treatment that’s practical, direct, and focused on functioning better in daily life. Before psychiatry, I spent sixteen years in ICU and trauma surgery. That background defines my style: calm under pressure, straightforward, and focused on what actually works to help you function at your best.

Getting to know Michael Hickey

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is straightforward, collaborative, and practical. We focus on understanding what’s driving your symptoms — and more importantly, what needs to change to improve them. Insight matters, but feeling better usually requires doing something different. Together, we’ll identify patterns and build a plan that fits your life and goals. On medication: I prescribe medication when it’s clinically appropriate and explain the “why” — including benefits, risks, and alternatives. There’s no pressure to take medication, and no assumption that it’s the only solution. The sessions: Appointments are conversational but focused. We’ll look at the factors maintaining your symptoms and decide on specific, realistic changes — behavioral, biological, or both — that can move things forward. The style: Many of my patients prefer a direct, grounded approach with clear next steps rather than open-ended exploration. You’ll leave sessions with a concrete understanding of what we’re working on and what to do between visits.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session: Our first meeting is a comprehensive 60-minute evaluation. We’ll review your clinical history, current symptoms, and specific goals. For those seeking ADHD evaluations, the focus is on diagnostic clarity and executive functioning. ADHD assessment is included as part of the clinical evaluation, with no additional testing fees. By the end of the session, we’ll have a clear, actionable treatment plan, and I’ll address any urgent symptoms or medication needs. Follow-up & continuity: Follow-up visits are typically scheduled every 1–4 weeks based on your needs. Some schedule as needed. These sessions focus on results — monitoring progress, adjusting medications as needed, and refining the plan to keep treatment effective. Access & communication: I offer flexible scheduling, including evening and weekend hours to accommodate professional schedules. I’m responsive between sessions for questions or concerns, and to support continuity of care.
