Getting to know Michael Hickey

I’m a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner providing medication management and psychotherapy for adults with anxiety, panic, depression, mood dysregulation, ADHD, OCD, anger and irritability, and burnout. My style is pragmatic and direct, and many of my patients are men and professionals who want to function better in daily life. Before psychiatry, I spent sixteen years in ICU and trauma surgery, which shaped how I think about the relationship between physical and mental health. I’m interested in both the immediate problem and what may be happening beneath it. I consider longstanding patterns and underlying conflicts alongside sleep, exercise, nutrition, substance use, stress, and physical health. Medication can be an important part of treatment, but I don’t assume it’s the only one. Outside of work, I’m heavily into fitness, skateboarding, and snowboarding. My interest in the connection between physical and mental health carries into my work as well.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is straightforward, collaborative, and curious. We’ll work to understand what you’re experiencing, what may be driving it, and what keeps it going. I’m active in sessions: I ask questions, offer observations, and tell you what I think. Sometimes we’ll focus on practical changes in the present; other times we’ll look more closely at patterns that have developed over time. Insight matters, but I believe it should eventually translate into something useful in your life. When medication is appropriate, I’ll explain my reasoning, including the benefits, risks, and alternatives. There’s no pressure to take medication and no assumption that it’s the only solution.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first meeting is a comprehensive 60-minute evaluation focused on understanding what’s going on and developing an initial treatment plan. ADHD assessment is included as part of the clinical evaluation, with no additional testing fees. Follow-up visits are typically scheduled every 1–4 weeks depending on your needs. I offer evening and weekend appointments and am available between sessions for appropriate questions or concerns.

I was set up with Michael due to a scheduling issue with the provider I originally chose. I couldn’t have been more satisfied with how Michael treated me. Was very clear and explained his thought processes behind the choices he makes. I would certainly recommend!

A true professional who genuinely seemed to care and wanted to listen. Unlike other Doctors that I’ve had terrible experiences with that have made me hesitant to reach out for help. This gave me hope again.
Listen.. stop trying to throw medicine at me. All I wanted was to talk not to giving sleeping pills. Wonderful guy just needs to take a different approach.
I was hesitant after the company rebooked me twice in one day but the doctor was knowledgeable and a great listener. I really feel I benefitted from meeting with him and got help to start mental health improvement
He asked me all the right questions, and the answer was good in getting to know me. I’m having a good feeling about him. Just hope that I can continue with him.
