Michael Lo, APRN

Michael Lo, APRN

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
FL
I spent five years working as a primary care nurse practitioner. During my time at a primary care clinic, I became acutely aware of the pressing need for mental health services, particularly as I witnessed the impact of depression and anxiety on patients' overall well-being. To enhance my ability to support my patients' mental health, I pursued additional training and became a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). I earned my Master's in Nursing from the University of Florida, which provided a strong foundation for my advanced practice and specialized mental health care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The client is motivated to improve and has identified specific areas they want to work on, either through self-discovery or during therapy sessions. They are open-minded about pharmacotherapy and are committed to following up with their provider regarding this treatment. I collaborate with my clients to develop a personalized plan of care that meets their needs. Together, we establish expectations and tasks, allowing us to discuss any necessary adjustments during our next visit. I actively listen to the client’s complaints and concerns, particularly regarding areas they wish to address with pharmacotherapy, such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and mild psychotic disorders. I am more than happy to assist the client on their journey to better mental health. I believe that mental health care should not be solely dictated by healthcare providers. I encourage patients to actively participate in their own care plans. Providers should offer essential information about risks and benefits and work collaboratively with patients to create an effective plan of care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In my view, effective mental health care involves encouraging patients to actively participate in shaping their own care strategy. It's crucial for healthcare providers to offer comprehensive information, and then collaborate closely with patients to develop a tailored plan of care. This partnership approach ensures that treatment aligns with the patient's needs, preferences, and goals, leading to more effective and sustainable mental health outcomes. I collaborate with my patients to develop a personalized care plan that meets their unique needs. Together, we establish clear expectations and tasks, allowing us to review and make any necessary adjustments to the plan during our next visit.
