Getting to know Michelle Patterson

I’m a Medical Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in helping couples and families navigate some of life’s most challenging moments—especially those involving grief, loss, and the impact of medical issues on relationships. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based care, with a strong focus on helping partners reconnect, build resilience, and support one another through difficult times.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work closely with couples facing the stress of chronic illness, major diagnoses, or caregiving roles. These experiences can deeply affect communication, intimacy, and the balance within a relationship. Together, we explore those changes and develop practical tools to strengthen your connection and navigate these transitions as a team. A central part of my work involves supporting couples through many forms of grief and loss, including: Infertility, miscarriage, and pregnancy loss Adjusting to chronic or life-altering medical conditions Emotional distance or loss of connection within a relationship Anticipatory grief, bereavement, and healing after the loss of a partner I understand that grief doesn’t just happen after loss—it can show up quietly in relationships, especially during times of stress or change. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where both partners feel seen, heard, and understood.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I use evidence-based approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), tailoring each session to meet your unique needs as a couple. I believe that even in the midst of hardship, relationships can grow stronger, and healing—both individual and shared—is possible. I hold a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, along with specialized training in medical family therapy and certifications in grief and bereavement. I’m deeply committed to helping couples move through pain toward greater understanding, connection, and hope for the future.
