Dr. Miles Ardaman, MD

Psychiatrist

After more than 25 years of practice, what motivates me the most? Guiding someone on a path to a healthier and happier life! First and foremost, listening carefully, without judgment, in casual relaxed conversation, allows me to more fully understand someone’s struggles. Then we can devise a tailored treatment plan with realistic goals that will work toward reducing suffering and unlocking someone’s true potential (personal growth). I view my work with patients as a collaborative process involving shared decision-making and centered around someone’s strengths, educational/cultural/religious background, and treatment preferences. Since the time of ancient Greece, we’ve known that the mind and body are very much connected. As psychiatry is a medical specialty, I integrate an understanding of any medical or surgical conditions (the body) into how these might affect mental health (the mind). By coordinating with the patient’s medical/surgical team (if present/available), we can determine the best approach to treatment. I am comfortable working with medical co-morbidities such as chronic pain, obesity, and hypertension. To be comprehensive, I often recommend laboratory testing for common nutritional or metabolic conditions (e.g. vitamins, minerals, hormones, inflammatory markers) that can affect brain function. Sometimes, to better understand the structure and function of the brain, it is helpful to order radiological imaging (e.g. MRI or CT) or consult for more specialized testing (e.g. personality inventories, information processing ability, etc). Similarly, coordinating with the patient’s counselor/psychotherapist, further helps to individualize care, and avoid redundancy. While I always offer psychotherapy as part of my practice, usually my role is more supportive by offering psychoeducation on diagnoses, treatments, and psychological concepts/topics. I have formal training in psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral as well as dialectical behavioral therapies.
