Getting to know Dr. Morgan Van Leer

I became a therapist because I wanted to be there for people during the times when they feel most alone. I’ve had my own experiences with therapy that were life-changing, and I hope to create that kind of meaningful experience for the people I work with.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our first session is what I call laying the foundation. I’ll want to understand not only what brings you to therapy, but the experiences and relationships that have helped shape you—family, friendships, romantic relationships and other important parts of your life. My style is warm, genuine, nonjudgmental and collaborative. Clients often tell me that therapy with me feels like a place where they can finally let their walls down and talk about thoughts or feelings they haven’t felt comfortable sharing anywhere else. That matters to me. I believe meaningful change begins when you have enough safety to explore what is really happening without feeling ashamed or judged for it. At the same time, therapy with me isn’t only about validation. I believe we can have compassion for why a behavior or pattern developed while also recognizing our responsibility for changing what is no longer serving us. We are not defined by our mistakes, but we do have a role in deciding what we do next.
