What should a new client know about working with you?

Warm Welcome: Most mental health professionals strive to create a welcoming and safe environment for clients. You should expect a warm greeting and an open, non-judgmental atmosphere. Initial Assessment: The clinician will likely conduct an assessment to understand your background, current concerns, and mental health history. This may involve asking questions about your emotional wellbeing, significant life events, family dynamics, and any past experiences with mental health services. Setting Goals: You’ll have the opportunity to discuss what you hope to achieve in therapy. This may include exploring specific issues, improving coping strategies, or working on personal growth. Explaining the Process: The therapist should explain what to expect from the therapy process, including how sessions typically unfold, the types of approaches they use, and any relevant policies, such as confidentiality. Building Rapport: The first appointment is an opportunity to get to know the therapist and for them to get to know you. It's important that you feel comfortable with them since the therapeutic relationship is key to successful treatment. Exploring Concerns: You will have the chance to discuss your feelings, thoughts, and any symptoms you may be experiencing. This can be a time for open dialogue about what’s troubling you. Discussion of Treatment Options: Depending on your needs, the therapist might discuss potential treatment options or modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness techniques, or other approaches. Logistics: The therapist may go over logistical details, such as the frequency of sessions, duration, fees, insurance coverage, and cancellation policies. Next Steps: At the end of the session, you may discuss what the next steps will be, including scheduling follow-up appointments or any homework or resources to consider before your next session. Supportive Environment: Above all, you should feel heard and validated. Safe space.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Initial Session (First 30-60 minutes) During our first session, we'll begin by reviewing your medical history, including any previous mental health issues, medical conditions, and current medications. This will help me understand your overall health picture and identify potential areas of concern. Next, we'll discuss your primary reasons for seeking mental health care and your treatment goals. This will give me a clear understanding of what you hope to achieve through our sessions. Diagnostic Process (Ongoing throughout sessions) Throughout our sessions, I'll conduct a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation to identify any mental health conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms. This will involve a combination of the following: Psychiatric history: Reviewing your symptoms, mood, and behaviors to identify patterns and areas of concern. Physical exam: Conducting a physical exam to rule out any underlying medical conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms. Mental status exam: Assessing your mental status through a standardized interview, including your thought process, perception, and cognitive function. Diagnostic interviews: Using standardized interviews, such as the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.), to assess for specific mental health conditions. Cognitive and psychological assessments: Administering standardized tests, such as depression and anxiety screenings, to help determine the severity of your symptoms. Talk Therapy (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) As a PMHNP, I incorporate talk therapy into my sessions to help you understand and manage your symptoms. Specifically, I practice cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is a problem-focused approach to addressing negative thought patterns and behaviors. During talk therapy, we'll work together to identify and challenge negative thoughts and behaviors that may be contributing to your symptoms. This will involve: Identifying negative thought patterns: Working together
