“A friend recommended Nellie to me about a year and a half ago, and working with her has been genuinely life-changing. I’ve been in therapy for about 10 years, and her approach is the only one that has really worked for me. She helped me get out of a depressive period, significantly reduce my anxiety, and make changes I’d wanted to make for years but didn’t feel confident doing before. I would highly recommend her.”

Getting to know Dr. Nellie (Kornelia) Harari

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with specialized training in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for a range of disorders, including depression, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, phobias, insomnia, trichotillomania, and skin picking disorder. I also work with clients with a variety of life issues, including managing difficult relationships, life changes, and other stressors. My work with clients is based on a fundamental belief that they CAN change and improve their quality of life. I work collaboratively to help clients clarify their own therapeutic and life goals, and we quickly get to work pursuing them. Together, we would examine how your thinking may contribute to distress and help you CHANGE unhealthy thinking patterns and unwanted behaviors. At the same time, we acknowledge real life challenges you may be experiencing, and work on more effectively coping with and managing them. Each client has his or her own individualized treatment plan that we collaboratively agree to work on. I received a BA in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, and my MA and PhD from St. John’s University. My pre-doctoral training included externships and internship at various local hospitals. My post-doctoral fellowship at the Westchester Center for Cognitive Therapy (WCCT) provided me with specialized training and experience in CBT for a range of disorders in children, adolescents and adults. After several years on faculty at WCCT, I opened a private practice with a focus on working with adults. I serve as an Adjunct Clinical Supervisor at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University, training and supervising doctoral psychology trainees. I am an out-of-network mental health provider and do NOT accept any insurance plans. Fees must be paid out-of-pocket in full. Receipts can be provided to make an out-of-network claim with your insurance plan, if you are entitled to such benefits.

What should a new client know about working with you?

One of the key components of effective change is a strong therapeutic working relationship. Clients have noted that my empathetic style, therapeutic flexibility, and firm belief that they can better their lives has helped them to make changes that have otherwise seemed too difficult. My openness to communication and feedback about the therapy process ensure that clients’ perspectives of treatment and progress toward goals are always being considered.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

An initial consultation is a 45- minute long discussion about your current struggles, your mental health and life history, and your goals for treatment. By the end of the consultation, I will provide you with recommendations and an initial plan for treatment, which at times may include further assessment of your difficulties. Following the initial intake, treatment is usually conducted once a week, until improvement allows for a gradual tapering off of regular meetings. An important part of CBT is also committing to working on your therapy in between sessions by engaging in collaboratively determined assignments, such as psychoeducational readings, monitoring thoughts and behaviors, and practicing new skills learned in therapy. Weekly one-on-one therapy sessions focus on collaboratively and actively following an individualized treatment plan to help you understand and change unwanted thoughts, feelings and/or behavior patterns. Sessions are goal- directed and address current difficulties using a variety of techniques, depending on the presenting problem. Progress towards goals is continually monitored, and treatment is flexibly applied as needed. Depending on your unique needs, some techniques may include: - identifying, evaluating and modifying distressing/ maladaptive thoughts and beliefs - mindfulness and acceptance of thoughts and feelings - exploration of and active commitment to chosen values - developing self- compassion - gradual exposure to feared situations - exposure with response prevention (ERP) - communication and assertiveness skills training - problem solving skills - behavioral activation - sleep hygiene

Have been working with Dr. Harari for a while now and cannot say enough good things about her. She's kind and direct and I leave every session with strategies, reframes, and processes for how to handle the week or circumstances ahead. We've done one off sessions for one off issues or sometimes tracked a long-term, more complicated problem over multiple weeks and I never have to re-explain what I'm talking about or reintroduce her to my life characters - she's thoughtful and professional and ready for me every time. The treatment is excellent, but also all things logistical are seamless from the billing system to communications about next appointments - it really lets me focus on and be present for each session instead of making therapy feel like a part time job of scheduling and filing and doing invoices. Cannot recommend enough!
Nellie is simply the BEST. I've been working with her for years, and she has drastically changed my life (for the better). I've been in and out of therapy for a long time, and I've never had someone understand me or help me as effectively as she has. She always provides actionable steps to navigate the issues we discuss, as opposed to just passively listening. Cannot recommend her enough.
For a first time visit although I was apprehensive and nervous the entire experience was very pleasant, professional and positive. I’m so happy I made this decision to reach out for support!!!
