Getting to know Pamela Joy Abao

I’m a Board-Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with expertise in assessing and treating a broad spectrum of mental health disorders, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and alcohol use disorders. I earned my Master’s in Family Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from Walden University. I hold a multistate license and can provide telehealth services to clients in California, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and Oregon. My Areas of Expertise: Military & Veterans' Mental Health: I support active-duty service members and veterans with issues like PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Alcohol Use & Mental Health: I have training in treating individuals with alcohol use disorders alongside co-occurring mental health disorders. Inpatient & Residential Care: I have experience providing care in both hospital and residential settings for those who need more intensive treatment. Outpatient & Community-Based Care: I also work in outpatient clinics and community health centers, providing ongoing support for individuals in need. My Approach: I take a holistic, patient-centered approach to care, focusing on all aspects of your well-being. Through collaborative decision-making, we work together to understand your needs, explore treatment options, and develop a plan that aligns with your goals. My priority is to offer compassionate, evidence-based care that promotes long-term recovery, emphasizing balanced, lasting solutions rather than short-term interventions. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about how I can help, please reach out. I’m here to support you!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Individualized, holistic care, combining therapy, lifestyle, and medications when necessary. My focus is on creating sustainable treatment plans that support long-term well-being, rather than relying on short-term fixes. I prioritize compassionate, evidence-based practices and empower patients with education, shared decision making and a deeper understanding of mental health to promote lasting recovery. Psychiatric Evaluation: Before prescribing or refilling any medication, I will require a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. This evaluation is essential to ensure that we are addressing your symptoms in the best way possible and to determine the appropriate medication, if needed. Collaboration: I believe in working together to create a treatment plan that fits your goals and preferences. Your input is important in making decisions about your care. Compassionate, Evidence-Based Treatment: I provide caring, research-backed solutions for mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance use. Confidentiality & Respect: Your privacy is a top priority. I will always respect you and ensure our work together is based on trust. Ongoing Support: I’m here to help you every step of the way, whether it's through treatment, adjustments to your plan, or offering guidance as you work toward recovery.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Here's how I typically work with clients: Initial Meeting: We'll discuss your background, concerns, and goals to understand your needs. I’ll gather information about your mental health history, including past diagnoses, treatments, and medications, to create a personalized treatment plan. We'll also cover your medical and family history, as well as factors like lifestyle and relationships that may impact your mental well-being. Discussing Your Goals: We will discuss what brought you in and what your treatment goals are. Whether you're seeking relief from specific symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety) or want to improve your overall mental health, we’ll prioritize your needs. Diagnostic Assessment: During the evaluation, I will assess for symptoms of various psychiatric conditions, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. This helps me form a clear diagnosis and identify any comorbid conditions that may need attention. I will take the time to understand the pattern and severity of your symptoms and how they’re impacting your daily life. Creating a Plan Together: We’ll collaborate to develop a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your goals and preferences. Based on my findings, I will discuss treatment options, including whether medication might be helpful. If medication is part of the plan, I’ll explain the benefits, risks, and potential side effects to ensure you are well-informed. Starting Treatment: We’ll begin treatment, which may include therapy, medication, or other options. I’ll guide you through the process and monitor your progress. Ongoing Support: I’ll continue to check in with you regularly to provide support and make adjustments to the plan as needed. Review and Adjust: Over time, we’ll review your progress and make changes to your treatment plan to keep you on track toward your goals. I’m here to support you every step of the way and will adjust the plan as needed to help you achieve lasting progress.

Pamela is very thoughtful and sincere. She makes sure I feel heard and makes me feel very comfortable and that I'm in a safe environment to be my most authentic self. Having her help and guidance navigating my mental health has been wonderful and beneficial to my overall health. I recommend Pamala to all patients. Especially patients who identify as LGBTQ.
Pamela Abao is truly wonderful. She is such an incredible listener as she remembers details that I forget sometimes. She is INCREDIBLY responsive over her portal if you have questions or issues with your treatment plan. It feels like she is around 24/7. I wouldn't want to see any other practitioner because she also deeply understands what you may be going through.

Pamela is friendly, clear in explaining my treatment plan, and nonjudgmental. The appointment was reassuring, and I felt heard and supported throughout
Ms. Pamela is extremely compassionate and patient with me. I feel like she does not only care about me, but actively remembers my interests and my struggles, and helps care for me based on my experiences. I especially appreciate how she goes above and beyond to care for me after office hours by contacting me when it comes to health (ex. reminders of appointments or picking up medicine, something I frequently struggle with). I really feel like she accepts me for who I am without judgement and only wants the best for me, and with Ms. Pamela's care, I feel like she is a wonderful support system for me to be a better human and live a better life :]
She is very kind and understanding. I have been having insurance issues and she responds to my messages usually the same day. My past psychiatrist was extremely difficult to get a hold of which is why I really appreciate the responsiveness.
I felt heard and understood, and comfortable talking about my situation. A friendly atmosphere were you could be yourself. I really appreciate all of these things! I look forward to my next appointment
Amazing and helpful!

I have been in mental health care for years and due to change in my insurance plan I had to find a new psych and so far happy with the care and always good experience with her each visit. I am confident in the care I received and she was able to answer all my questions without judgment.
I want to thank NP Abao for the exceptional support she has provided me and my partner. She is always available to answer questions, even outside of our scheduled appointments. Seeking help for mental health issues is new to me, especially being Asian, it's not something we often talk about in our community. I had been in denial about many emotional symptoms, but with her help, I've been able to better manage my daily stress. I truly appreciate the 100% care and support she has shown. Thank you!
