Getting to know Dr. Patrick Mele

I strive to be curious and grounded so we can create a comfortable space for you to understand yourself more clearly. I can be empathic when you need comfort, or I can challenge you when you are inches away from a breakthrough. By asking questions and exploring new perspectives, we can unearth what is “not quite right” in your life. Therapy is a collaborative process, so let’s meet and see how you can overcome the obstacles standing in your way. I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University, which informs my approach and commitment to your growth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Each individual therapy process is different, but often follow a similar progression. Please note that the timeline listed below is not an exact timeline, rather a gauge to understand how a therapy process usually unfolds. Your length and experience in therapy may differ (even drastically) based on your individual needs. The “getting to know you” phase (sessions 1-4) – At this stage, I will begin to understand more about why you are coming in. This stage may be filled with questions, observations, and curiosities that elicit more detail about your life and your specific presenting concern. The goal here is to set-the-stage for the process and understand more clearly what can be worked on. The “working” phase (sessions 5-10) – At this point, enough patterns and details will have become more present in our sessions. This is where we will begin to understand and confront the parts of ourselves that we would like help working through. This can take several forms, but often involves a collaborative discussion with the therapist about goals, patterns, and areas of focus. The “consolidation” phase (sessions 11-20) – Here we begin to revisit the insights learned in previous sessions, connecting them to larger, more stable patterns in our lives. We review what has changed, what remains to be changed, and where we may feel “stuck.” The “deep-dive” phase (sessions 20 and beyond) – Most people begin to feel better after being in therapy for a few months. For some, therapy has provided enough personal growth for them to continue navigating life on their own. Others may opt to remain in therapy, using it as a tool to continue to deepen their relationship to themselves and understand, with more clarity, how they can continue to grow in their daily lives. This is where less-pressing issues may come to the forefront, providing the opportunity to finally “get a handle” on the things that we may have ignored for a long time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I provide therapy for those curious about themselves, emphasizing warmth and exploration to foster insight and self-knowledge. Each session will be tailored to your needs. Some sessions may be more supportive while others may be more challenging. Whether you are coming in for individual or couples therapy, we will find the approach that works best for you. Our psychotherapy process will likely take twists and turns, but it is a ride that may provide you with a deeper connection to yourself and a set of tools to manage the adversities and good fortunes of life.

I had been struggling with depression for a very long time, almost my whole life. I first started therapy in high school working with a counselor and then started with Patrick when I started college. My mental health has been much better since my first few times in therapy. Patrick helped me build skills to be more successful in college and feel more in control of my life. He was always warm and offered me practical ways to do better in college. I learned a lot about myself and my relationships while in therapy. I still feel sad here and there, but it is nothing like the stuck feeling I had before starting therapy.
College was a really rough time for me, I was going through a breakup, parents divorce, and my own personal trauma. It felt overwhelming and I started failing my classes. Therapy helped me stay focused and not feel so overwhelmed by everything in my life. It was supportive, helpful, and it helped me find a way through to graduation. My life wasnt perfect, but I learned to cope with it. Patrick was a big part of helping me survive college and now I feel like I am finally thriving so many years later.
Patrick helped me get to the root of my problem quick and he was also very kind. I felt comfortable opening up to him about things I told only a few people before. It helped to not feel so alone.
