About Dr. Paul Ryan

Dr. Paul Francis Ryan is a New York–licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist serving New York City, with over 20 years of clinical experience in China and the United States.
He holds a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine from Pacific College of Health and Science, a Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Manual Therapy from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and a degree in Nutritional Science from the University of Vermont. His clinical training includes internships at Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
From 2010 to 2012, Dr. Ryan worked as an acupuncture specialist at the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Guangzhou, China, where he practiced within a large, hospital-based traditional Chinese medicine system.
Dr. Ryan integrates acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, osteopathy-informed manual therapy, nutritional guidance, and meditation into individualized care. His clinical approach emphasizes non-invasive, sustainable treatment grounded in both classical Chinese medicine and modern integrative practice.
During nearly two decades living and training in China, Dr. Ryan studied closely with senior clinicians and lineage holders, including founders of Abdominal Acupuncture and Zuo Acupuncture. He received advanced apprenticeship-based training in these methods and continues to apply them in clinical practice. In addition to patient care, he teaches internationally and serves as faculty at Pacific College of Health and Science.

Paul Ryan is a very skilled, compassionate, and generous practitioner of the healing arts. He has a strong background in Chinese acupuncture, the foundation of his practice, as well as in craniosacral therapy and meditation. Moreover, he takes the time to really listen and ask questions. As in the best of Chinese medicine, Paul looks at a wide range of signs and symptoms to develop a picture of a person’s physiological ecosystem, and he works to balance and tune that system as a whole, with excellent outcomes. He has helped me with several apparently unrelated problems, from minor annoyances to chronic pain to more medically challenging syndromes, always to my relief and satisfaction. I have gone to several acupuncturists in the past, but never found anyone whose work had such an immediate impact. I highly recommend him.

I recommend Dr Paul Ryan for a very comprehensive treatment. With his help I was able to uncover the real cause of my upper respiratory illness and get to the root of the problem. He is very detailed and asks many seemingly unrelated questions, that will help diagnose you better. Very much appreciated the care I received.

Dr. Paul Ryan is the best discovery I've ever made. His impact on my health has been nothing short of transformative! Not only is he kind, but also extremely knowledgeable. With a calm demeanor, he listens attentively during every session to understand your needs and ensure that the treatment is on the right path, addressing any additional requirements. I initially consulted him for stomach issues, allergies, and fertility. In less than 8 sessions, he completely restored my body and alleviated my stomach problems. The combination of acupuncture, manual therapy, and Chinese herbal medicine provides the most comprehensive treatment I have experienced. Not only have I regained a level of health I hadn't felt in years, but I also discovered I was pregnant. I continue to see him for support during my pregnancy, and I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone seeking to restore their health both physically and emotionally. Rest assured, you are in the BEST hands—you won't be disappointed!

I saw Dr. Paul after I had tried many different treatments for neck and shoulder pain including extensive physical therapy, steroid injections, and chiropractics. My pain would always come back, and by the time I saw Paul I had more or less accepted that my goal was now to manage rather than get rid of my pain.
Paul has been the only practitioner who has led me to a lasting reduction in my pain and has shown me a way forward that doesn’t include a never-ending set of expensive treatments. His mastery of many techniques, as well as his understanding of and respect for many schools of thought have benefitted me greatly as his patient. I stopped having to worry, as I did with other practitioners, that Paul might miss something or be leading me in the wrong direction. Paul’s commitment to integrity as a health practitioner is evident to me.
I would recommend Dr. Paul to any of my friends or family struggling with pain, especially pain that is complex or chronic. He is excellent!

Dr. Ryan is a meticulous practitioner and is obviously extremely skillled and experienced. He is also friendly and kind. He was recommended by three of my neighbors and I haven't been disappointed. I went to him with what I feared was a hopeless pain problem and, after hree weeks of treatment, it came under surprisingly good control. Although nobody can make everyone better, I suspect that Dr. Ryan has more than his share of satisfied patients.

Dr. Paul Ryan was very professional on my first visit. His attention to detail and experience let to an accurate diagnosis. When he began treatment, I knew right away that I was in good hands. He explains all his findings with very detail explanations. It’s been 2 session since I first starting working with Dr. Paul, I’ve like to say that my life is changing to complete 360. The pain on all areas on my body have diminished, I feel one step closer to becoming myself again.
I am looking forward to continue my treatment with him.

Dr. Paul Ryan is incredibly understanding and took the time to really listen to my health concerns. He’s continued to stay invested not only in my initial health concerns, but has also helped to figure out methods and treatments to improve my overall health, always following up after the appointment to check on any changes. Run, don’t walk to receive acupuncture with Paul. He is helping me to resolve long-standing patterns that result in migraines and other headaches.
His sessions are the way I have always wanted acupuncture to be. He stays with me, and monitors and adjusts the needles and hands on work according to how I respond as the session goes on. This makes the session deep and effective.
Paul is knowledgeable, thorough, and caring. As an experienced healthcare practitioner myself, I know quality when I see it. I’m happy to recommend Paul.

I've been enjoying Paul Ryan's healing touch since 2017, when he saved me from the chronic pain and misery from a broken back. Everything about Paul and his practice is beyond reproach. He has provided me with the most profound healing of my life, from needling to cupping to helping me get started with a meditation practice that has changed the way I live. I could not recommend seeing him with more conviction and assurance. In fact, I carry a stack of his business cards and hand them out to everyone that tells me they are in pain, need, or distress.

Paul is as kind as he is wise. He is the kind of practitioner who genuinely cares about the clients he treats and will go above and beyond to provide the most comprehensive and individualized care. His wealth of knowledge was obvious from our first meeting, and he is generous and open to sharing his wisdom.
I've received acupuncture, body work, cupping and craniosacral therapy from Paul, and I can't recommend him more highly. He creates a safe and trusting environmental where real results are possible.

Paul is an exceptionally insightful and supportive practitioner. From my first visit, he engendered a lasting sense of warmth and trust because he reveals humility, compassion and most importantly, his own endearing personality from the start. He remains laser focused on any issue I bring up during a session, yet he leaves room for me to continue my internal processing and fluid shifts. I especially appreciate the clear mental and emotional space Paul creates before, during and even after a session. I feel complete permission to discuss any type of response I have to the work, whether it is needles, craniosacral, or a caring thought he passes along in the context of the session.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Ryan on and off since 2016 for various musculoskeletal, digestion issues and stress reduction. His integrated diagnosis has been accurate and treatments effective. His willingness to coordinate care with my other providers is refreshing in our disintegrated medical system. He’s knowledgeable, explains clearly the Chinese and western medicine nature of my problems and treatment his approach. He never rushes the appointment. I’ve recommended many friends and family members to him over the years and feel fortunate to be under his care.

I initially saw Dr. Ryan to address my fertility. However, sessions with him soon began to really help and address my long-standing issues with stress and anxiety in a profound way. My treatments with Paul were transformational. Prior to my first treatment I had been taking OTC and prescription medications daily to manage my allergy symptoms. This went on for nearly 20 years.. Although I had consulted with my medical doctor, several allergists and an herbalist, the only way to I was able to get any relief was with medication and that was not always successful. After my first treatment with Paul I stopped taking the meds and have not taken any since. Go see him now!

I had a mild COVID infection in 2020 and suffered from Long-Hauler Syndrome for six months prior to seeing Dr. Ryan. I was suffering from ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis) a.k.a chronic fatigue syndrome, dizziness , shortness of breath and heart palpitations that worsened after physical and mental exertion (post-exertional malaise). This made work and exercise very difficult. After a month of acupuncture, manual therapy and Chinese herbal medicine treatments, the improvements were so significant that I felt close to being fully recovered. With another month of subsequent treatment I was back to normal ready to try for our first child. Dr. Ryan took time to listen to my concerns and to fully understand the different aspects of my lifestyle. He individualize my care in a way that provided a practical and effective way out of my condition. I would highly recommend Dr Ryan to anyone struggling with symptoms related to Long-Hauler Syndrome.

I saw Paul several years ago while visiting my son in New York City. I was in need of continuing my acupuncture while traveling there after a car accident. I have been receiving acupuncture for nearly 40 years, and Paul is the most impressive acupuncturist I have ever experienced. All of the treatments he learned in China provided great relief to me. On return trips to NYC I always scheduled appointments with him. I hope to return to NYC and receive treatments again.

Dr. Paul is our go to for so many reasons. Dr. Paul has been treating my 6 year old son for just over a year. We have worked on impulsivity, eczema on his hands and more recently molluscum. We as well as his teachers noticed an improvement in his focus in school and ability to self regulate. After one treatment the eczema was cleared and has not returned a year later. We saw a noticeable difference in the bumps after 1 treatment on the M.C. As I am writing he is having his second treatment. My son enjoys cupping treatments with Mr Paul. Mr Paul explains everything before he does it and creates a calm experience. My son removes his own needles and Mr Paul honors any hesitation my son shares.
In the beginning of January, I tested positive for COVID. Dr Paul prescribed a number of herbs and supplements that kept the progression and symptoms to a very minimum. I experienced a runny nose for 20 minutes, a slight headache for a few hours, a fever of 99 for 3 hours and 1 digestive episode. As each new symptom appeared he adjusted my course of treatment. I truly believe this was the reason for the very mild experience I had. After my 3rd day I was symptom free and no residual effects. I strongly recommend him.

Impactful, Extremely Caring, Genuine
Dr. Paul has helped me find a happy place in life again. Not only did his depth of knowledge, breath of treatments and confidence in my healing to a full recovery give me hope, his experience and wisdom stemming from years and years of experience in many areas in Eastern medicine provided faith and acted as a new route (the right route) of healing for me. Getting to the root of the problem and resolving it (rather than covering it up with meds) was the only way for me.I would urge you, don't choose this doctor because of a review that says he's worked on "exactly what you have". Nobody is the same. BUT, choose this doctor because he's honest and genuine, he can do many many things, and if he cant help, he will tell you. Honestly, his work seems like miracles. You're worth it, this doctor is worth it. I struggled with an invisible, complex and painful post concussive syndrome. Head pain/migraine, neck pain, vestibular issues, vertigo, depression +other emotions, fatigue, fear.

Dr. Ryan combines his depth of knowledge with great care and compassion. I've always felt seen, heard, and understood. I was recommended to Dr. Ryan by a TMJ specialist. Not only has Dr. Ryan helped me to almost entirely clear significant pain and the tension that caused it, he's also helped me with other less acute issues. Dr. Ryan spends time with me at the beginning of each session checking in so that he can ascertain which treatment is right for me in that moment. I'm very grateful for his thoughtfulness and care.

I have seen Dr. Paul Ryan since 2016 after undergoing conventional treatments for sciatic nerve pain. I’m extremely lucky to have found such a caring, generous, and knowledgeable practitioner. He has helped me greatly to manage what was an excruciating pain. He is truly a professional and meticulous, always answers my questions clearly. Currently I see Dr. Ryan monthly and find myself looking forward to these visits. His approach is one where the connection between body and mind is ever present. Over the past several years his ability to heal has comforted me in stressful and emotionally challenging times.

Paul Ryan is head and shoulders over any other acupuncturist I have seen. Every time I see him, he takes the time to talk to me and see what would be the best treatment for me on that day. He does not program a plan of treatment that he sticks to without consideration of the changes that have taken place since my last visit. Not only that, but the variety of approaches and techniques he is proficient at is unparalleled. I cannot recommend him more highly.

Paul is not the average local acupuncturist. He is exceptional. Paul spent almost two decades living, studying and practicing in China. His breadth and depth of knowledge of Chinese medicine and the culture and context in which it evolved, is at a very high level, rarely found. He listens to the patient’s body physically, internally and emotionally to sense what is happening very carefully. His treatment integrates all these aspects and more, treating the whole of the patient. Paul’s kindness and open heart brings a gentleness to the care of his patients that binds all the aspects of his Chinese medicine expertise to yield the best results. Needless to say, I highly recommend Paul and consider myself fortunate to be in his care.
