As Chief of Vascular Surgery, Dr. Faries leads the clinical and academic efforts of the Ruth J. & Maxwell Hauser and Harriet & Arthur Aufses, Jr., MD Department of Surgery’s Vascular Division. Since joining Mount Sinai in 2007, he has directed 14 vascular surgeons on the faculty, along with medical and administrative staff. An admired mentor, Dr. Faries actively develops training and fellowship opportunities in vascular surgery. Dr. Faries earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his internship and residency in Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, Montefiore Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Harvard University’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. An expert in treating carotid artery disease to prevent stroke, Dr. Faries has advanced minimally invasive vascular surgery, especially percutaneous techniques that improve arterial blood flow without traditional open surgery. His practice focuses on percutaneous transluminal angioplasty for carotid artery stenosis, renovascular hypertension, and lower extremity ischemia, as well as endovascular treatments for thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms. Dr. Faries oversees numerous clinical trials investigating new vascular disorder treatments. He leads a National Institutes of Health-supported laboratory and research team studying the root causes of aortic aneurysm, his area of expertise, and the potential of stem cells to treat this condition. He has also studied a filter designed to protect the brain by capturing plaque debris released during angioplasty. Before joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Faries was Site Chief of Vascular Surgery and Associate Professor of Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
