Getting to know Philip Hennessey

Welcome to Your Better Tomorrow! I am the owner and one of the principal providers of Better Tomorrow Psychiatry, a private outpatient practice in downtown Seattle. My areas of professional focus include: Depression (including treatment-resistant depression), Attentional and Executive Function Disorders (including ADHD) and reviewing complex psychiatric medication regimens. I also provide care of Bipolar Disorders, Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Transgender/Nonconforming Gender Psychiatry, Obesity/Medically Supervised Weight Loss, Psychosis/Schizophrenia, Insomnia and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I have been a certified physician assistant for 7 years and have spent almost all of that time working in various subspecialties of psychiatry, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In 2022 I was awarded a Certificate of Advanced Qualification in Psychiatry, which is the most advanced formal certification currently offered to psychiatric physician assistants and earned by less than 3% of all PAs in the United States. I am an enthusiastic participant in the World Federation of ADHD and World Congress of Psychiatry as well as a supporter of the Washington Academy of Physician Assistants. I also serve as a test question writer for the national PA Psychiatry certification exam and publish medical review articles. Originally from the East Coast, I moved to Washington in 2015 to attend Heritage University Physician Assistant School and have remained in the Evergreen State since then. My experiences training in rural and medically underserved areas across the Pacific Northwest instilled in me a passion for providing high-quality psychiatric care to all populations. I enjoy providing care across the acuity spectrum and developing a holistic and comprehensive knowledge base that brings me enormous joy to share with my patients.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a psychiatry PA with a strong background in internal medicine, my approach examines both the mental and physical aspects of wellness and illness. My practice is based firmly in evidence-based medicine and I make sure to always bring the most current research and science to bear so that you feel confident knowing you are receiving the best possible standard of psychiatric care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During the initial 90 minute psychiatric evaluation, we will get to know you, your mental and physical health history, discuss specific symptoms and phenomenon you are experiencing, and establish your goals for treatment. During the assessment process, imaging and labs are sometimes ordered, as I investigate and address both physical and psychological determinants of mental illnesses. Once we formulate a diagnosis, various treatment modalities may be discussed, including medication, psychotherapeutic interventions and the need for further psychological testing. I believe firmly in shared medical decision making and believe that you should always be the final arbiter of your own treatment course. If you are concerned you may have ADHD or a related executive function disorder, I offer a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment process spanning the course of multiple visits and including formal objective neuropsychological testing as well as an extensive history taking. My philosophy about follow up care is that early and close intervention is usually the fastest path to achieving remission of illness and achieving your treatment goals in the shortest time possible. On average, you can expect to see either significant clinical improvement or a remission of illness in about 1-3 months after starting treatment with me. We will frequently reassess your progress toward your goals, while addressing challenges, such as medication side effects, life stressors and changes in your overall health status.

Phil is a very caring professional who takes the time to get to know you as a human person before treating you as a patient.
Philip is attentive, knows his craft very well. Works in the best interest of his patients. Highly recommend.
I enjoy working with Philip Hennessey because he is a good listener, shares complex concepts in an easy-to-understand way, explains why he recommends specific courses of action, allows me autonomy to make my own decisions about my healthcare, and checks in with me regularly throughout the appointment.
Philip listens to my health concerns and takes all of them seriously, including the ones I'm more likely to brush off myself. He's a great doctor to see if you're struggling with chronic health issues.
I think Dr. H is the most knowledgeable Psychiatrist I have seen in my 40 plus years. He so smart and explains what happens in the brain without meds but also what different meds could be beneficial and why. Also, one thing I REALLY like is he is a less is better prescriber. Meaning he doesn't want to put someone on 2 meds then them have to take 6 for the side effects. I've been overly medicated by the older crowd so I am delighted to have met him and his team. He is seriously a breath of fresh air and super easy to talk to with a bit of humor mixed in. They are quick to respond to any request via phone or email which I prefer. He isn't ever in a rush and listens 110% when he's talking with you and your situation. Very attentive and I'm so glad I was one of His first patients. Forever grateful.
Dr. Hennessey has been an extraordinary psychiatrist, offering a level of care and attentiveness that I had never experienced before starting medication treatment. From the very beginning, he showed an exceptional dedication to understanding my unique needs and tailoring my treatment plan with great care. He listens deeply, ensuring that every concern is acknowledged, and he’s been prompt in making adjustments as necessary. His willingness to adapt to what I need has made a significant difference in my journey, providing me with a sense of trust and comfort that I hadn’t found in prior treatment experiences.
I have worked with Philip for a couple years now. He takes all of my concerns seriously and is so aware of what treatments options exist and what the current research looks like. I find him to be a wonderful provider and a delight to work with.
Philip has been persistent in making adjustments and revisions to tweak my results. He is perceptive and gives me helpful feedback. I appreciate his effort to keep pursuing improvement.
I have been regularly seeing Philip for two years as of the beginning of September. Throughout this time, Philip has gone above and beyond to ensure I receive the medical attention I need, even taking the time to check in with me on his days off when I was experiencing negative symptoms. His patience and diligence have helped me in ways that I cannot fully express, and a large part of the success I have had since the fall of 2022 can be attributed to the fortunate experience of being under his care.
Philip has been a life saver for our mother. He stepped in when finding a provider was nearly impossible and took care of my mom and had her feeling like herself in days. Thank you for your thoughtfulness abs prompt response.
I believe Philip Hennessey is an amazing and professional and very helpful. I always look forward to speaking with him and getting help from him. He is always kind and offers a helping hand. I would recommend him to anyone.
I have never received better care from a mental health professional. Philip Not only has expansive knowledge in psychiatry, but also internal medicine. Beside being very personable and professional he has so many insights from his experience that apply to me since I am a type 1 diabetic. I can't say it enough, he's a blessing and has changed my life.
Philip is always amazing and I can't see myself seeing anyone else to help manage my ADHD. I appreciate how real and honest he is. He seems genuinely interested in not only your mental health, but your life as well! Love him!
