Getting to know Dr. Philip Liu

***ADHD MANAGEMENT will require periodic IN-PERSON visits in SAN DIEGO*** CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, YOUNG ADULTS, AND EARLY CAREER/YOUNG PROFESSIONALS TEND TO FIND OUR PRACTICE STYLE MATCHING WELL FOR THEIR NEEDS. Throughout different stages of our lives, we often face challenges that can make us feel stuck and unable to move forward. Whether concerns involve our children's wellbeing (ADHD, poor moods, oppositional behaviors), work hardships, interpersonal or relationship stressors, or life transitions, these are all opportunities to promote growth, build inner resilience, and deepen our understanding of ourselves. I am a double board-certified child/adolescent and adult psychiatrist who specializes in combining up-to-date, evidence-based medical practice with the art of understanding our minds and being through in-depth psychotherapy. I earned my Doctor of Medicine from Tulane University, completed my Psychiatry residency at the University of Texas, San Antonio, and pursued a Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the same institution.

What should a new client know about working with you?

**After making an appointment request on ZocDoc, we will contact you directly through text/phone/email for a brief free phone consultation to make sure we can meet your needs and are a good match for each other before confirming the requested appointment. If you are going through insurance, we will also verify your insurance at that time to make sure there are no surprise/unexpected charges/fees** By exploring and making meanings of our beings and lives, we empower ourselves to move past and integrate our ambivalences (that often frustrating inner back-and-forth we have with ourselves) and the seemingly paradoxical/contradictory. I strive to assist and nurture a visceral content and understanding that it is, and we are okay being the human beings that we are, even when we falter on the uncharted course of life. I hope to explore and experience together, that by virtue of our individual lives and experiences, we are uniquely and inherently valuable and worth cherishing. If you/your child have concerns about psychiatric diagnoses and wish to understand how to thrive beyond these labels, I warmly invite you to reach out and discuss how we can work together to help you/your child integrate these understandings within our personal whole being. I sincerely look forward to meeting and accompanying you on this journey of healing, self-discovery and personal fulfillment.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session, we will work together to start to identify and understand how your and/or your child's personal history, experiences, and current factors may be contributing to your/their specific concerns as well as overall mental health. We will then formulate together and implement a plan/ road map to help you/them meet your/their immediate needs and goals, including discussing medication options and their indications should you wish. In ongoing subsequent sessions, we will strive toward acknowledging, accepting, and embracing our inherent unique personhood/being to help further our personal sense of enrichment, fulfillment, and connectedness with those around us and with our community.

Similar as other reviews, I had a great first session with Dr.Liu. He was a great listener but empathetic but also very to the point. The paperwork was also super easy and everything was super clear. I’m excited to work together.

Speaking with Dr. Liu was a wonderful experience. He asked great questions that provoked clear, insightful answers from me. I spoke about myself during the first half, then Dr. Liu came in with his understanding and suggestions. While I wasn't forced to take his "diagnoses" as the final truth, he shared insightful perspectives about my experience I had never thought about before. He carefully shared with me what I could be experiencing based on my feedback and shared guidance what we could do for my next steps. I'm thankful that I ended up working with Dr. Liu, and it's an experience I won't forget. If you're on the fence, this is your sign not to be!

My kids were under Dr. Liu's care for behavioral issues. We were having some family changes in addition to the concerns we have of our of children. Dr. Liu was very approachable and kind. He was really compassionate and candid at the same time. Sometimes I'd attend the meetings sometimes and my husband would. We both agree that Dr. Liu has been really helpful for all of us. Even though we as parents were not his patients, per se, we are really glad he saw us as a family.
Very friendly doctor and great listener.
