I am an experienced general psychiatrist and addiction psychiatrist. I completed my Doctor of Medicine at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, followed by a residency in General Psychiatry at Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Center and a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at New York University. Over the years, I have trained many psychiatrists; NYU residents and faculty often consult me on challenging cases. My approach is flexible and tailored to your interests. I bring 14 years of experience in private practice and extensive experience in hospital and emergency department settings. This background gives me a broad perspective and the capability to provide detailed, comprehensive assessments and treat a wide variety of symptoms. Before your appointment, I offer a free 10-minute phone consultation to briefly discuss your concerns and ensure I can assist you. If you want this, please indicate so in the "notes for the doctor" section when booking and include a few good times to talk. If booking a same-day appointment, please check your email promptly for consent forms and instructions. ** YOUR APPOINTMENT IS FULLY CONFIRMED ONLY AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE CONSENT FORMS SENT TO YOUR EMAIL ** Per updated federal regulations, controlled substance prescriptions require IN-PERSON appointments only. ** Please note I am an out-of-network provider. What should a new client know about working with you?

I'm a strong advocate for psychotherapy and judicious use of medications, as well knowledgeable in complementary and alternative approaches and herbal supplements. Also, I am out-of-network for insurance and do provide receipts following each visit which include information typically required for submission to insurance for reimbursement. The fee for the initial consultation is $650 and follow-up visits are $500.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Conducting a detailed one hour initial consultation to examine in depth the nature of your struggles, your preferences for treatment, and if you have had experience in treatment in the past. Communication with other clinicians including any other medical doctors if appropriate or therapists. Developing a detailed treatment plan and determining appropriate follow-up regularity.

The doctor was up front about the fees and checked in with me before the appointment to make sure I understood that as well as checking to see if my issues/concerns were things that he could address. The doctor was very empathetic and listened to the reasons I was seeking care. He asked very pertinent questions, and made it clear it did not wish to over-medicate me. He gave me multiple opportunities to ask questions. I did not feel rushed or quickly categorized. I will definitely meet with him again. I felt very comfortable speaking with him,

Dr. Dhrymes is professional and courteous. He gives ample opportunity for asking questions about medications he prescribes. Dr Jim was so cool and knowledgeable... he gave me the time I needed and understood exactly what I was looking to achieve, resulting in a very strong mental health plan. I couldn’t be more pleased to have Dr Jim on my side.

I cannot recommend Dr. Dhrymes enough. He has helped me immensely already after my first week of treatment. He is a great listener, and answered all my questions about treatments. He also is very available to speak to patients & communicates well with other doctors.
    Video visit
Dr Dhrymes is super on top of things, fast, kind, and compassionate. I was hesitant at first to engage with an out of network doctor because I was concerned about past experiences with psychiatrists who rush you. Dr Dhrymes is the opposite. He took a long time consulting me, following up with my doctors to check that there weren’t any issues with my medication, and making sure my accommodation letter was right. Absolutely the best choice. I’m glad I stopped agonizing over it and scheduled a video visit. I was able to use my FSA card paying via Square so it ended up being not financially strenuous as well. Dr Dhrymes has been very validating of my feelings, gender identity, and also great at clear communication. If you have the ability to see Dr Dhrymes, I highly recommend you do!
