About Dr. Phoebus Jim Dhrymes
Welcome to my practice! In addition to being an experienced general psychiatrist, I'm also a well known addiction psychiatrist. I've trained many psychiatrists myself; NYU residents and faculty often consult with me on challenging cases. My approach is flexible based on your interests. I offer my experience in treating patients in private practice for 10 years, as well as my similarly lengthy experience working in a hospital and emergency department, which gives me perspective and capability in providing detailed and comprehensive assessments, and treating all varieties of symptoms.
In our initial consultation we can explore what you would like help with, and the way in which I can help you; we can then review options for treatment.
In order to make best use of your time, I will provide a free-of-charge 10-minute phone consultation to briefly discuss your concerns and to ensure that I may be able to help you with them. If there is a particular time at which you'd prefer I call you, you can indicate that in the "notes for the doctor" area of the form that appears when booking your appointment, otherwise I will call you within a day of when you book in order to have the phone consultation.
If you are booking a same-day appointment, please try to be available by telephone for at least a few minutes, as I will do my best to call you within 1-2 hours of your booking. This is both to conduct the free phone consultation and answer any logistical questions.
Please note I am an out-of-network provider. Payment is accepted by credit card, health savings account card, or Zelle. I'll provide you with a receipt which can be used for insurance reimbursement as per your plan's out-of-network policies.

Dr Dhrymes is super on top of things, fast, kind, and compassionate. I was hesitant at first to engage with an out of network doctor because I was concerned about past experiences with psychiatrists who rush you. Dr Dhrymes is the opposite. He took a long time consulting me, following up with my doctors to check that there weren’t any issues with my medication, and making sure my accommodation letter was right.
Absolutely the best choice. I’m glad I stopped agonizing over it and scheduled a video visit. I was able to use my FSA card paying via Square so it ended up being not financially strenuous as well.
Dr Dhrymes has been very validating of my feelings, gender identity, and also great at clear communication. If you have the ability to see Dr Dhrymes, I highly recommend you do!
