Dr. Ramiro “Sonny” Cavazos is the founder of Sage Bariatric Institute and has 20 years of experience in Bariatric Surgery. Advanced fellowship training in Bariatric Surgery was completed by Dr. Cavazos at the Wittgrove Bariatric Center under the guidance of Dr. Alan Wittgrove of San Diego, California. Dr. Cavazos has broad experience in laparoscopic surgery and extensive operating room technical expertise for bariatric procedures, including laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, revision bariatric procedures, duodenal switch, and adjustable gastric banding (Lap-Band®). He has performed thousands of bariatric surgery procedures since 2005 and has received numerous awards for his work in bariatric surgery. Patients have noted Dr. Cavazos’ surgical expertise, compassion, and bedside manner. Dr. Cavazos takes a holistic approach to weight loss and weight loss surgery, including pre-care, after-care, and maintenance programs. Dr. Cavazos grew up in Ft. Worth, Texas and received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He received his medical doctorate from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. His residency in general surgery was completed at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He then began fellowship training at Scripps Hospital in San Diego. Dr. Cavazos is a board certified surgeon with the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Cavazos enjoys skiing, fishing, playing the guitar, college football, and other sports. He resides in San Antonio with his wife and 3 daughters.
