Richard Mendoza, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist
MA
As an adult/married man/minority, I know how what it feels like to experience self-doubt, fear, anxiety, chronic stress, and trauma. I have effectively worked with adults, children, adolescents, veterans, and couples whom have experienced academic/social/personal/relational struggles. Moreover, my past/present experiences provide opportunities to find common ground and connections with the aforementioned populations. In terms of my specialty, I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist and though I specialize in treating couples and families, I also work with clients that present a wide array of issues that include but not limited to depression, anxiety, chronic stress, substance-use, PTSD, and grief. As a therapist who has been on the other side as a client, I know how difficult it can be to open up to a stranger. My hope is to cultivate a safe therapeutic space so as to allow the client(s) to breathe and sit in the present moment with themselves and in time, assist with discovering insights as well as solutions to pertinent issues.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I utilize CBT to assist with identifying/restructuring negative core beliefs and negative thoughts patterns. I also implement a person-centered/humanistic-experiential approach to help client's regain their autonomy and improve their self-esteem. For couples, I utilize Emotional Focused Therapy/Attachment theory to change interactional patterns, expand emotional experiences, and heal core wounds.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Initially, I will work on building rapport, identify depressive/anxious/behavioral symptoms, and collaborate on practical solutions to improve cognitive-behavioral functioning, reduce maladaptive behavioral patterns, and foster self-understanding. I guide clients towards rediscovering genuine connections to themselves as well as meanings from their experiences.
