Dr. Richard D. Murray MD is a board-certified neurological surgeon with advanced training and specific expertise in the management of complex cranial and skull base disorders. Dr. Murray treats all intracranial conditions, such as primary and metastatic brain tumors, low grade and malignant gliomas, benign brain tumors (e.g. meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, and pituitary adenomas), intracranial vascular disorders (e.g. aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations), hydrocephalus, trigeminal neuralgia and other cranial nerve compression disorders, and encephaloceles. He employs a combination of traditional cranial approaches, minimally invasive neuro-endoscopy, and stereotactic radiosurgery to provide his patients with multi-faceted treatment options. Dr. Murray has received comprehensive subspecialty training in endoscopic techniques to provide “scarless” removal of certain brain tumors. He leverages this sub-specialty training in minimally-invasive techniques towards spine surgery, incorporating both traditional and motion-preserving applications, including artificial disc replacement. He provides general neurosurgical care including treatment of common spinal disorders, brain and spine trauma, and other conditions. Dr. Murray was born in Arizona, USA and raised in South Africa, where he obtained a medical degree from the University of Stellenbosch. He began his post-graduate medical training as a registrar in South Africa, and upon his return to the U.S., completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Vermont. Dr. Murray pursued extensive subspecialty fellowship training in skull base and micro-neurosurgery at Louisiana State University under the guidance of Dr. Anil Nanda, MD and endoscopic brain and skull base surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City under the guidance of Dr. Theodore Schwartz, MD. Dr. Murray serves as Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA.
