Getting to know Dr. Robert Lustig

I have been a psychiatrist for over twenty-five years, primarily in New York City, which has given me the opportunity to treat adults from across the globe and across the spectrums of race, class, gender, and sexuality that make up the rich tapestry that is NYC. I have worked with people in all phases of mental health challenges: those who are highly productive in most aspects of their lives but confronting new onset emotional distress; people in crisis who have developed prominent anxiety, depression, or other mood disturbances; individuals who have engaged in serious attempts at self-harm and present at hospital emergency rooms, often followed by psychiatric hospitalization; people in recovery from more severe mental health symptoms and/or substance use-related difficulties; and those confronting the impact of serious, even life-threatening medical illnesses. I earned my Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, which has shaped my holistic approach to patient care. I know that every person I work with is unique, and I enjoy discovering that uniqueness over time. Know that I want to get to know you as you wish to be known, and we will work collaboratively to achieve your therapeutic goals. I offer a combination of expertise, experience, and compassion in which you can place your trust.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I completed my residency in psychiatry in 1992 at Hillside Hospital-Long Island Jewish Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine and I was appointed a chief resident in psychiatry in my senior year of training. As a medical student, I had also taken an elective to learn about innovations in psychopharmacology at the National Institutes of Mental Health in Bethesda, MD. I became board certified in psychiatry in 1994 and re-certified from 2004 -2014 by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. I have enjoyed teaching psychiatry to medical students and residents of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. I have worked in a wide variety of clinical settings and I have extensive experience in outpatient, inpatient, and recovery focused psychiatry. I have addressed the mental/emotional health needs of persons living with HIV in two specialty care programs and I was formerly a volunteer co-leader of an AIDS therapy support group at GMHC prior to the development of effective treatments for HIV infection.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Given my depth and breadth of experience, I am judicious in recommending medication for new patients. If I think that non-pharmacologic approaches are likely to be as, or perhaps more, effective than medications, I describe these alternatives, how they may be helpful and why. Your questions and your thoughts are always welcomed as are those of your therapist, with whom I can work collaboratively. I believe that psychotherapy is an especially important component of treatment and provides opportunities to address the impact of your current and past life experiences which medication alone cannot address. When I do believe that medication is appropriate, I explain my rationale, explore your willingness and/or apprehensions, and work with you to help you in your decision about medication. I know that every person I work with is unique. I enjoy discovering that uniqueness over time. Know that I want to get to know you as you wish to be known and we will work collaboratively to achieve your therapeutic goals. I offer a combination of expertise, experience, and compassion in which you can place your trust.

Thank you Dr. Lustig for your professionalism, and understanding. I highly recommend this MD.

I really appreciated the way he explained everything. He's very kind and knowledgeable.
A really bad experience. I've been experiencing increasingly worsening anxiety symptoms, and left this appointment feeling more anxious. He spent a substantial amount of time on his own background, did not review the intake forms ahead time, and when going through them together kept getting side tracked and meandering off. I didn't feel like he was listening to me, cut me off a few times, and I felt really invalided the entire time. Despite numerous times saying "medication won't cure everything, and I don't want to push them", ended up offering a medication that - upon receiving a second opinion and speaking with my existing mental health team - was an extremely inappropriate choice for my symptom profile, furthering the point of him not really listening or absorbing my case. I cannot recommend this provider.
The doctor spent a long time with me. He showed that he deeply cared about my condition. He was very thorough. I started very stressed but left his office feeling relaxed and relieved.

This doctor spent 3/4 of the visit bragging about his entire life biography . He would not start the session until my credit card payment was checked . He does not believe in prescribing any medications and if so no larger than 5 milligrams ! His office couch was painful and so low to the ground I could barely get off of it ( I am disabled) He also pushed that I use other social workers in his office . THERE US NO RECEPTION One enters into an empty room but got some chairs .. no signage as to where you are or what luis happening . The office felt like a tomb! If you need real help I would never recommend this pracyice

Terrible listener! I knew in advance that Dr. Lustig typically does not prescribe medications as a first option. Since my goal was to discontinue medication, I thought he would be a good fit. However, as I shared my medical history, he interrupted me several times to say the SAME thing about his medication policy, which made me feel like he wasn't actually listening. First, I want to emphasize that I was on a very simple and common medication, far from a serious controlled substance. Even so, he issued several separate dated prescriptions that would allow me to pick them up only on the exact day I was supposed to start taking them, forcing me to go to the pharmacy at least three times. When I tried to reach out to him, I realized there was no way to communicate, which is truly absurd, given that he's a psychiatrist. Weird experience! It's awful to feel like you're being treated with suspicion when seeking medical help.

He was nice, but spent most of the time talking and did not spend sufficient time understanding my concerns and why I was there. Spent most of the time just reading my questionnaire in front of me and asking questions I had already answered there. Def rambled a lot and could be way more concise
Very informative!

This provider is excellent. He said the smartest thing, which I never heard before, but seems so basic...medical doctors can test with machines physical items, but to explore the mind, one must ask questions, and go off learning and experiences to get to a diagnosis and potential treatments.
