Getting to know Dr. Robert Madsen
Dr. Madsen is a 1972 graduate of the Honors College of the University of Utah where he received a National Science Foundation grant to assist research projects into the modeling of media violence by children and the adult parameters of interpersonal perception/judgment. Between his undergraduate and graduate education and training he worked for a year with a private research firm investigating the employability of troubled veterans. His Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology was awarded from the University of Maryland in 1977. Before that he obtained clinical training during two and one-half years of half-time work at VA Hospitals, first in medical psychology, then inpatient psychiatric triage. His formal year of internship was split between the outpatient department at the University of West Virginia’s Medical School and the Robert F. Kennedy Federal Prison, where he inaugurated and investigated a program of intense directed physical fitness and its relationship to inmate mental health and adjustment.
Upon graduation Dr. Madsen was employed for seven years in the forensic wing of St. Elizabeths Hospital, first as a staff psychologist on post-trial treatment wards and then as a clinical administrator in pre-trial assessment. Since 1985 he has been in full-time private practice, splitting his time evenly between forensic evaluations of adults and adolescents (criminal and civil) and outpatient treatment of adolescents, adults and couples, often with a major emphasis on anxiety and/or sexual problems. He has testified in numerous city, county, and federal courts in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Outside of his membership in national and state psychological associations, his major affiliations are with the Society for Personality Assessment and the Association for Advancement of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.

Definitely. We had so much in common that it was almost surreal. Great listener. Shared things about his own life that helped me understand certain ideas.

Dr. Madsen is so wonderful! I highly recommend him- he has such a deep understanding of so many topics and processes related to mental health, and knows how to connect with his patients and make them feel comfortable. I’ve done my best self work, and learned a lot about myself because of my sessions with Dr. Madsen.

I love that Dr, Madsen accepts insurance - otherwise I would not be able to afford his services.
He's interesting and unorthodox and unlike any therapist I've ever had before and that's a good thing.
Dr. Madsen asks interesting questions, and has a talent for identifying the crux of a problem and how to come up with a plan of action.

Dr. Madsen is a breath of fresh air! He puts you at ease right away with his friendly demeanor. He explains everything clearly and uses great relatable examples. He’s professional and empathetic. It’s very easy to talk to him. I highly recommend him!

I would not recommend Dr. Madsen. He rambled at length about himself and his family history, from his father's marital history to the present day, uninterrupted for almost thirty minutes. When asked what his method was, he continued in an interminable monologue about his life and his family. Eventually, he asked me a series of perfunctory, somewhat random questions about my life. He made several bizarre comments about smart women and how men have issues with them, and the likelihood that they will end up alone. He showed a lack of self-awareness and empathetic concern for the patient. His primary interest seemed to be in talking about himself.

Dr Madsen is a personable & knowledgeable guy, and we really enjoy talking with him. He was very insightful into our situation and offered helpful suggestions. But if you need to stay with the allotted time of your appointment, I would not recommend him.

Dr. Madsen spent the entire first meeting asking me about my background, family history, why I’m visiting, and diving into me as a person. I really felt like he was invested and interested in me and my issues. I’m definitely going to see him regularly.

My appointment with Dr. Madsen was incredibly disappointing. After years of avoiding therapy I finally got up the courage to go, and the experience was quite upsetting and has turned me off from therapy for the future.

Dr. Madsen is amazing. Not only is he ridiculously well-versed and up to date on psychology research, he is very calm and empathetic, and knows how to create an atmosphere of safety, to give you room to realize things on your own, while at the same time staying ready to give you a mountain of sound guidance whenever you ask for it.

One of the kindest, most genuine people I have ever met. Has lots of cool stories to tell and makes you feel like you're just old friends catching up. Incredibly intelligent and insightful, willing to take the time to get to know you at your own pace but knows how and when to push when needed. Cannot recommend him enough, he has taught me so much about myself.

Our appointment was scheduled for an hour and went an hour and forty minutes which would've been fine had I known. I went in for my first counseling session and may have spoken for 30 of the 90+ minutes. He talked about himself and his family almost the entire time. I walked out of the appointment both frustrated and angry as I felt like I was more his counselor than he was mine.

This was my first initial meeting with him, but he seemed very knowledgeable and is a great listener. I definitely am excited for my next session with him, to learn more about myself and how I can make myself a better person.

He talks about himself for most of the appointment. He's a lovely man and I'd love to have him as a friend. But he helped me VERY LITTLE as a psychotherapist.

Dr. Madsen is awesome! He has so many interesting stories that he is able to relate towards your personal treatment plan. He never rushes visits either. I arrived 30 minutes late to my last appointment (DC Traffic is the worst) and not only did he still see me, but he still gave me the full hour for my appointment. He is a great doctor and also just a wonderful person all around. Highly recommend to those who are looking for in-depth appointments and a provider who will actually listen.

Dr. Madsen was great in outlining a treatment plan and really getting to know me as a patient. I felt and ease and had a sense of calm after seeing him.

I'm a skeptic by nature, a little shy, reserved and cautious--and-- perhaps irrationally so, I often approach a visit to a new doctor as I would if I were to--oh, let's say "go visit a fortune teller" -- though the latter is not quite my cup of tea--but just an example). Anyway, with all that being said, at the conclusion of my second visit with Dr. Madsen, I felt very comfortable and confident that he is an excellent psychologist. Apart from being very professional and having a great office, Dr. Madsen is forthright, insightful, clear and focused on helping with the issues I wish to get help with, and will continue to see him for in the weeks, months- or whatever number and frequency of visits to come.
June 25, 2015Christopher R.Verified patient
He made me feel very comfortable and put me at ease with his stories. He seems incredibly knowledgeable and interested in understanding who I am so that he can treat me with what specifically will work for me. He's unconventional, in a casual, personal way.

Note that he is a psychologist. He came up on ZocDoc when I searched for a psychiatrist, and I was disappointed to find in person, that he is not in fact a psychiatrist.
