Getting to know Dr. Ryan Kimball

Dr. Ryan Kimball is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in the Denver area. His approach to therapy is cognitive-behavioral with a particular emphasis on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In your work with Dr. Kimball you can expect to focus first on what you value most in life and identify goals to help you live a life aligned with those values. Then, you will be guided in developing new perspectives and responses to old ways of thinking and feeling that often result in your feeling trapped. Dr. Kimball’s emphasis on a brief and evidence-based approach to therapy is based on his belief that efficient care is conscientious care. His primary focus is on providing a space that is emotionally safe, unconditionally accepting, and spiritually edifying. That is when the best healing will take place. You then work together to implement those evidence-based approaches to get you to a point where you feel empowered to self-manage your concerns and conditions and consistently choose the direction of your life. Dr. Kimball deeply enjoys the therapy experience and process, because he believes it is a privilege to witness individuals reclaiming their lives and experiencing the profound satisfaction that comes from living a values-centered life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

A new client should know that working with me is an active, collaborative, and values-driven experience. I strive to create an emotionally safe, unconditionally accepting space where clients can explore their thoughts, emotions, and life challenges without judgment. My approach is grounded in cognitive-behavioral therapy with a strong emphasis on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on helping you live a life aligned with what matters most to you. I believe therapy should be efficient, purposeful, and empowering. Rather than staying stuck in old patterns of thinking or feeling, our work will focus on developing new ways of responding to internal experiences so they no longer control your choices. My goal is to help you feel capable of self-managing challenges and confidently choosing the direction of your life, rooted in your values and personal meaning.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with identifying what you value most and what kind of life you want to build. From there, we collaboratively set clear, meaningful goals that align with those values. Early sessions focus on understanding the patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that may be contributing to feeling stuck or limited. Using evidence-based ACT and cognitive-behavioral strategies, we work to increase psychological flexibility; learning to relate differently to difficult thoughts and feelings rather than trying to eliminate them. Therapy is typically brief and structured, with an emphasis on practical tools you can apply outside of sessions. Over time, the focus shifts toward strengthening your ability to independently manage challenges and consistently take actions that move you toward a fulfilling, values-centered life.
