Getting to know Dr. Salman Alam

Have you ever felt truly understood by a mental health professional—and found yourself searching for that same connection again? Or perhaps you’ve worked with several psychiatrists but still haven’t found the right fit. If that resonates with you, you may be in the right place. Here, care is grounded in genuine connection, careful listening, and a thoughtful, individualized approach. You won’t be rushed or reduced to a checklist—your experience, history, and goals truly matter! Who am I?: I am a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in Adult and Geriatric Psychiatry. I earned my undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and completed my medical school at New York Institute of Technology School of Osteopathic Medicine. After medical school. I did my residency at The Wright Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania where I had the honor of serving as Chief resident. I completed his residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he actively engaged in medical education and innovative projects utilizing technology to enhance psychiatric care. My Philosophy: My practice is based on one core belief: Fully understanding my patients leads to better outcomes! Your past and present come together to inform your current symptoms. I gather this information by truly listening to you as well as the care team around you (therapist, PCP, specialists) around you. In the quest to find the most effective path for you, I utilize scientific methods: Thorough testing and rating scales such as Montreal cognitive assessment, Young Brown OCD rating scale Interventions for more treatment resistant illnesses E.g. Electro convulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and ketamine infusions/intranasal administration When appropriate, I utilize GeneSight pharmacogenetic testing to tailor your medications

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have extensive experience treating adult psychiatric disorders across a broad spectrum of severity, with particular interests in treatment-resistant depression and geriatric psychiatry. Effective mental health care isn’t always defined by insurance coverage alone—it’s about finding the right fit and the right approach. I do accept select insurance plans (PLEASE CHECK OUT THE INSURANCE SECTION), and for some patients, choosing to pay out of pocket can be a worthwhile investment when the care feels truly aligned. Many individuals are able to receive reimbursement through out-of-network mental health benefits, and I’m always happy to provide a detailed invoice (superbill) to support your submission.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

You will receive a thoughtful, individualized approach to care. The initial appointment is a comprehensive 60-minute psychiatric evaluation designed to understand your full story—including your symptoms, personal history, strengths, and goals. This thorough assessment allows for an accurate diagnosis, when appropriate, and a collaborative discussion of a treatment plan that may include medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. I incorporate therapeutic work into care for many patients, particularly those seeking support with life transitions, anxiety, depression, trauma, or identity-related concerns. My practice can also help you with modalities more often offered to in-patient hospitals such as ECT. Follow-up appointments are typically 30 minutes and focused on monitoring progress, and making thoughtful adjustments to treatment as needed.
