Getting to know Dr. Samuel Petrie
I received my medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed psychiatry residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where I served as Chief Resident for Outpatient Services. My experience spans inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, emergency, consult-liaison, and interventional psychiatry, along with research on novel treatments for major depressive disorder. I am passionate about caring for patients with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, OCD, and trauma-related disorders.
I strive to create a warm, non-judgmental environment where you feel understood and safe to be challenged toward your goals. I combine evidence-based medication management with lifestyle changes and approaches drawn from CBT, DBT, ACT, motivational interviewing, exposure therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. I believe a compassionate therapeutic relationship is central to healing and value relationships grounded in trust and mutual respect.
Our first visit includes a comprehensive evaluation of your mental health, medications and substance use, social supports, family history, and stressors. Follow-up visits focus on progress toward your goals and adjusting your treatment plan as needed, while incorporating psychotherapy and lifestyle changes. I collaborate with you at every step to develop a personalized plan tailored to your needs and goals.
