Getting to know Dr. Samuel Sanders
Working closely with the patient, I believe in using the biopsychosocial model to address mental health problems. Through examination of the interconnection between biology, psychology, and socio-environmental factors, an individualized treatment plan can be created to best address targets to improve quality of life. I am comfortable treating a broad spectrum of diagnoses including mood disorders such as depression and bipolar, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, PTSD, and ADHD. I have a specific interest in the management of ADHD through my training experience. My treatment mainly focuses on medication management as well as education on other treatment options such as various psychotherapy modalities.
I obtained my undergraduate degree at Centre College and my medical degree at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. I moved to Los Angeles and completed my general residency in Adult Psychiatry at the UCLA/Greater LA VA Psychiatry program. I am board certified in adult psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Hobbies of mine include: traveling abroad, experiencing new cultures, eating great food, hiking, jogging, technology, video games, anime/manga, and cooking.

Dr. Sanders was good for my first appointment when I was nervous about starting a new med, and listened to my concerns when I said which side effects I was trying to avoid. I felt good about the medication we tried first, but unfortunately I had a severe delayed allergic reaction (verified by an allergist) to the med I was put on.
This in no way was the doctor’s fault, but when I told him what happened he seemed doubtful it was the med due to the rarity of the reaction, despite another provider’s confirmation, and me having no prior allergies until I started the drug. When I voiced concern over being placed on a new medication immediately after having such severe reaction to the first, he recommended I ‘try a different therapy approach’ to manage my ‘spiraling thoughts’. I wasn’t scared because of anxiety. I was scared because I had to go to the E.R.
I don’t think he’s a bad provider, but I felt so dismissed during a very scary time, and I don’t want anyone else to feel that way.
