Dr. Sandra Avila, PsyD

Psychologist
AZ
Young people face unique hardships as they navigate the complexities of growing up in today's world. With a PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University and a rich background at multiple community mental health clinics and some of California's most renowned hospitals, I'm well-versed in therapy services designed to help children, adolescents, and adults build strong emotional foundations and develop the insight they need to thrive. My patients tend to be individuals troubled by relationship difficulties, social pressures, academic and career responsibilities, and tumultuous life transitions. Many have the basic skills for managing life's challenges but continue to feel "stuck" or unfulfilled. If this resonates, you've likely exhausted your surface-level coping tools and are interested in understanding the "why" behind your actions to create lasting change from within. In our therapy sessions, I provide a safe and containing environment that makes confronting the hard questions a meaningful experience.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe that connection is the cornerstone of effective treatment. That’s why my sessions are largely rooted in psychodynamic and relational frameworks coupled with light-hearted humor and a person-centered approach. These evidenced based therapies recognize the collaborative partnership between the therapist and patient as a crucial tool for healing, and can be particularly beneficial for: • Individuals pursuing deeper self-understanding and personal growth • Those grappling with long-standing challenges that surface-level coping skills just can’t seem to resolve • Addressing concerns such as anxiety, relationship difficulties, and adjustment to change

What is your typical process for working with clients?

To ensure that you find the therapist who best aligns with your goals, I offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation. This initial meeting provides an opportunity for you to get to know me and for me to understand your concerns. It's a chance to gauge whether we have the right connection and whether my approach resonates with you. Ultimately, your well-being is my priority. Whether we decide to work together or explore other options, my aim is to support you in finding the therapist who can best meet your needs.
