About Sarah Jarrett

Growing up in a close-knit Dominican community, I witnessed the challenges families faced in managing chronic diseases like diabetes. It was a constant struggle in my own family, affecting my grandparents and several aunts and uncles. Despite following healthcare advice, managing diabetes while preserving our cultural traditions felt overwhelming. The dietary guidance we received often seemed disconnected from our reality, with little regard for the foods and cultural practices we cherished. This disconnect fueled my desire to make a difference. I knew I wanted to work in healthcare, but it wasn't until I discovered dietetics that I found my true calling. Becoming a Registered Dietitian became my mission to bridge the gap between conventional dietary advice and our rich culinary heritage. I earned my Master’s in Nutrition and Dietetics from Nova Southeastern University, which deepened my understanding of nutrition science and equipped me with the skills to provide culturally sensitive care. Throughout my journey, I focused on understanding the unique nutritional needs and cultural nuances of our community. I sought out mentors who shared my passion for culturally sensitive healthcare and immersed myself in learning about traditional foods and their impact on health. A pivotal moment came when I visited my grandmother in the hospital after a diabetes-related complication. I realized there had to be a better way to provide culturally relevant guidance. I committed to becoming a healthcare professional who could offer practical, culturally sensitive support to families like mine. Today, I work to create educational materials that honor our cultural heritage while promoting health and well-being. I've had the privilege of supporting families as they navigate their health journeys, offering guidance and understanding. Culturally sensitive care can empower individuals to take control of their health in a way that feels authentic and sustainable.

What I value most about visiting with Sarah is her communication style and understanding. She always explains what’s happening scientifically and in layman terms so I can fully understand my body and the plans to address issues. This has always been a priority concern with my care, and Sarah eased those concerns in the first session (and all after it.) Another bonus is her ability to understand my background and culture. I feel I can bring my whole self without judgement or guilt. Because of that, I believe I’ve been able to unlock and get through hurdles and am finally starting to feel and see progress in my health journey. In short, she’s an RDN that gets it — all of it!
She is excellent professional!!!
