He is a native of Severna Park and attended local schools. While at Severna Park High School he graduated with honors, captained the football team and was recognized as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete. Dr. Smith attended college at Washington and Lee University where he majored in psychology and minored in journalism. He was captain of the football team, awarded an R.O.T.C. scholarship and selected as the Outstanding Psychology Student his senior year. Inducted into Phi Beta Kappa he also was presented with an NCAA Scholar-Athlete award to continue his study of psychology in graduate school. Dr. Smith was trained in the internationally recognized clinical program at McGill University in Montreal, Canada where he conducted research on depression and substance abuse. His work was published in several notable journals and textbooks. He performed his internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. where he studied adult, child and adolescent evaluation and treatment. Dr. Smith has served as the Chief of Adult Outpatient Psychology at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington and as the Chief of the Psychology Section at Kimbrough Army Community Hospital located on Ft. Meade, MD. before entering private practice with Spectrum Behavioral Health. His areas of expertise include working with anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, behavioral problems, stress management, family problems, mood disorders, divorce and custody, trauma, abuse, habit disorders, chronic pain, school related issues, learning disabilities, ADHD, marital and couple’s concerns. His experience also includes testifying as an expert in court and evaluating fitness for duty and high level security clearances. Dr. Smith is also an avid sportsman and he enjoys applying psychological principles to performance enhancement. He has worked with athletes at the recreational, high school, college and professional levels.
