Dr. Sean Bell-Thomson, PhD

Psychologist
353 Lexington Ave, Ste 314, New York, NY
Psychotherapy is hard work. It takes commitment, perseverance, and fortitude. I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University, Brooklyn, a Master’s in Psychology from the New School for Social Research, and a Bachelor’s degree from New York University. My practice is run in an open, straightforward way. I work primarily with adults and young adults 18 and older. I specialize in couples therapy, personality disorders, psychosis, bipolar disorder, suicidality, high-risk behavior, and history of treatment failure. I use effective, relevant, and empirically supported techniques, but above all, I strive for directness and transparency in my work. I am also able to provide psychotherapy in Spanish.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Your first scheduled visit is considered a “Consultation,” and generally lasts 60 minutes. The consultation phase can extend up to 2 or 3 sessions (in rare occasions more), and may include requesting access to your medical records and/or permission to speak to previous providers and/or members of your family or close friends. Once I have sufficient information, I will provide diagnostic feedback and specific treatment recommendations. We will discuss your concerns and select the best resources to help with your difficulties. If the level of service that I offer seems sufficient to help you resolve your concerns, and if you decide to continue therapy, we will agree on a basic framework for the treatment and schedule a standing weekly appointment. If, during the consultation, you or I determine that you would be better served by another agency or provider, I will make a referral to an appropriate resource.
