About Dr. Shabiah Martin
Shabiah Martin, MD, joined Northwell Health in 2021 as a colon and rectal surgeon at Huntington Hospital, Plainview Hospital and South Shore University Hospital. He surgically treats patients with colon, rectal and anal cancers. He manages other conditions including diverticulosis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, anal fissures and fistulas, large bowel obstruction, pelvic floor disorders with rectal prolapse, and endometriosis involving the colon. He also performs diagnostic tests, such as colonoscopies.
Dr. Martin received his medical degree from New York Medical College and completed residency training in general surgery at Monmouth Medical Center. He then did a fellowship in colorectal surgery with a focus on minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic procedures at St. Vincent Health Center, and Allegheny General Hospital, PA.
“I knew I wanted to become a doctor after my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was young,” says Dr. Martin. He gravitated toward colon and rectal surgery during his medical training because he enjoyed participating and watching surgeons operate using minimally invasive techniques, an approach that minimizes bleeding and can improve recovery time. “Surgery is hands-on, I have the privilege of helping patients through dire situations, and witness them recover and return to good health,” he says.
At Northwell, Dr. Martin enjoys using the latest surgical technologies to provide patients with the best possible outcomes. “I also value taking the time to speak with people about their diagnosis and helping them understand their treatment. I listen to their goals and discuss expectations.” He works with a variety of other doctors, including hospitalists, gynecologists, oncologist, urologists, and radiologist, to create personalized treatment plans.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Martin is assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
