Getting to know Shakera Snelling
Hey! You're seeking help because it is needed. That's huge! Many people don't seek treatment or therapy, but you're already on this path. Some folks don't find the path. You've got some idea of what you need and are ready for someone to be along with you on this journey. We both know humans succeed in a team, not so much when we are alone. First, give yourself credit because it takes a lot of courage to not do things alone and to be willing to open up to someone you do not know. Your courage is where our journey together starts. It would be an honor to be a part of your team in life, for life!
Oh, hi, by the way, I'm Shakera Snelling. I am a dual-certified psychiatric and family nurse practitioner: I diagnose, prescribe, and utilize therapy for mental health and medical conditions. I earned my Master's in Family Health Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed a Post-Master's Certificate in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing at Valdosta State University. A diagnosis or symptoms help us figure out a plan together, but they are NOT who you are. (Yeah, I know you've heard that before, but it's true!)
High blood pressure does not define that person. Borderline personality, antisocial personality, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADHD, substance use disorder, anxiety disorder, phobias, psychosis, self-harm, suicide attempts, and trauma do not define you either. Please KNOW you're way more amazing, beautiful, and complex than a label. Let's get started!
What should a new client know about working with you?
During our sessions, clients can expect to gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their strengths, and their areas for growth. We explore patterns of thinking, behavior, and emotions to increase self-awareness and promote personal insight.
I also provide clients with tools, techniques, and resources tailored to their needs. These can range from mindfulness exercises, cognitive reframing techniques, stress management strategies, communication skills, medication management if needed and more.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
My approach to providing care is centered around building trust by listening, fostering open communication and a nonjudgmental space using validation, and collaborating with clients as a team. I believe in creating a supportive and empathetic environment where individuals feel comfortable expressing their concerns and sharing their experiences. I use psychotherapy (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and CBT) largely in sessions and medication management.

I've been counseling with Shakera for a couple of months now. She's extremely professional, courteous and empathetic.
She has a great listening ear, really helps you figure things out effortlessly. Great follow through and goes out of her way to really let you know you matter. I've never felt like just another number or patient. She's made a tremendous difference in my personal life and career.

Very comforting and understanding of my situation. Prescribed the right medication to me based off of my history and listened closely to my concerns. I highly recommend her and she will be my main psychiatrist that I go to from now on. The 55 minute drive is worth it for me. I’ve never had a psychiatrist that took everything into account and helped choose the right options for me. She is amazing!
