Hi there! This is Dr. Paul. I am a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Psychiatry. I have been practicing psychiatric care for all age groups at various outpatient and inpatient facilities in Arizona over the past 20 years. Symptom management can be a challenging journey. No two people are alike, meaning that symptom treatment must be individualized to each person. Over the years we have come to recognize that many variables contribute to mental health symptoms - genetics, environmental factors, life style behaviors, stress, physical illness, diet, etc. The list is long and unique to each person. This is why I decided to practice conventional psychiatry along with functional-integrative psychiatry. This combination of psychiatric care meets each person where they are at on their symptom management journey. What is conventional psychiatry? Conventional psychiatry relies heavily upon pharmaceuticals to reduce the symptoms of mental illness based upon the assumption that a neurotransmitter imbalance is present and that medication will alleviate symptoms. What is functional-integrative psychiatry? Functional medicine looks for the possible root causes of symptoms and focus on at the treatment of nutritional deficiencies, metabolic disturbances, gut dysbiosis and infections to manage symptoms. Often vitamins, supplements, probiotics, and herbal medications are ordered. Integrative medicine looks at effective treatments that address symptoms related to lifestyle habits that include, sleep, diet, exercise, and coping styles. Various treatments are recommend which may include individualized therapy. Personalized support is often needed for the individual to achieve optimal progress as quickly as possible.
