Sharon Varner, CNM

Midwife
911 W Henderson St, Ste 300, Salisbury, NC
My path to midwifery began with my own experiences during the births of my two sons. During my first delivery, a nurse cared for me in a way I will never forget. She explained each part of my care with kindness, included me in the process, and made me feel seen and supported during one of the most important moments of my life. That experience showed me the powerful difference a compassionate and knowledgeable healthcare provider can make, and I knew I wanted to offer that same sense of safety and support to other women and families. The word "midwife" means "with woman," and that is at the heart of everything I do. Being present with women, sharing in meaningful moments and difficult times, is a privilege I don't take lightly. I completed nursing school in 1997 and went directly into obstetrics, where I saw the value of empowering women through education, shared decision-making and evidence-based care. Midwifery allowed me to bring those values together across a woman's entire life. Shared decision-making is central to every visit. My goal is to help each patient take ownership of her health as much as her medical needs allow, with individualized planning, education and thoughtful conversation guiding that process. I also believe we are body, mind and spirit, and I work to honor each of those dimensions in the care I provide. Staying current is something I take seriously. Each year I complete more than 50 hours of continuing education. Outside of formal education, I regularly read and research to keep pace with changes in the field and better serve my patients. I also serve as a preceptor, which allows me to fulfill a deep enthusiasm for supporting future advanced practice providers and medical students.
