Dr. Sheila Apicella received her undergraduate degree at Barnard College in New York City. She then earned her medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine. After a pre-residency fellowship in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at St. Luke s/Roosevelt Hospital in New York, Dr. Apicella continued her post-graduate training at SUNY-Stony Brook. She completed her residency at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Institute (consistently ranked as one of the top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report). Board-certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Apicella treats general ear, nose and throat disorders including sinus disease, throat and voice disorders, diseases of the ear, sleep-disordered breathing, and pediatric otolaryngology. She also has expertise in minimally invasive endoscopic sinus surgery and balloon sinuplasty. She is an attending at Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Apicella is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, New York County Medical Society and the Medical Society of the State of New York. This was a fruitless visit. The doctor barely glanced at my ear that was one of the reasons for me coming in. She was very dismissive of a concern about my hearing and did not address it at all. She was frankly totally dismissive overall. Would not recommend or return.
I needed to see ENT asap for my ear problem. I was so relieved I could secure a spot in the same day. However, upon my arrival they told me that doctor is not in the office today (working in the other office). They must have received my appointment info via Zocdoc, but they didn't even send an email or phone call to tell me the doctor is not available. No apologies from the office staff either. I took my day off from my work to see the doctor. It was a total waste of my time.

I was super impressed with Dr. Apicella's directness, the way she provided the most useful information at every moment, and her bedside manner. Some ENT procedures are unpleasant but she gave me some in-the-moment advice that helped me get through it. She was very clear about what she was going to do and why, and explained how things were expected to go, and offered me an option to have an additional test or hold off. She provided samples for medication, and asked for a 2-week followup appointment. Like ALL doctors, her time is limited, so she moves quickly, but it's rapid-fire competence and extremely effective communication. I left feeling great confidence in her.
