Getting to know Shelly Clavis

Hello, I’m Shelly Clavis, a doctoral-prepared, dual board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner with over 11 years of clinical experience. I care for adults navigating a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, and substance use challenges. My background is unique in that I have worked extensively across primary care, acute care, and mental health settings, including critical care, cardiology, and addiction treatment. This experience allows me to approach mental health differently. I do not view it in isolation. I look at how your physical health, stress levels, lifestyle, and emotional experiences all interact and influence how you feel day to day. I earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice from Rutgers University, my Master’s in Family Health Nursing from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and my psychiatric training from Wilkes University. Over time, my work has been shaped by a clear mission: to bridge the gap between physical and mental health care so patients can receive truly comprehensive, connected treatment. My approach is holistic, practical, and deeply patient-centered. I combine medication management with therapy-informed care and a strong focus on prevention, lifestyle, and long-term wellness. My goal is not just to help you feel better temporarily, but to help you understand your health more fully and build a sustainable path toward stability, balance, and overall well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting mental health care can feel like a big step, especially if you are used to managing things on your own. When we work together, you can expect a supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental space where you can speak openly and feel genuinely heard. I take time to understand not just your symptoms, but how they are affecting your daily life, your energy, your relationships, and your overall health. You will not be rushed or treated like just a diagnosis. Instead, I focus on building a strong, trusting relationship where you feel comfortable asking questions and being honest about what you need. I believe care works best when it is collaborative. I will guide you with clinical expertise, but your preferences, goals, and comfort level will always be part of the process. My role is to help you feel informed, supported, and confident as you move forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We begin with a comprehensive initial evaluation that looks at the full picture of your health. In addition to your mental health symptoms, I also explore your medical history, current medications, sleep, stress, lifestyle habits, and any underlying physical factors that may be contributing to how you feel. This is especially important because many mental health symptoms are closely tied to physical health. From there, we develop a personalized treatment plan that reflects both your mental and physical needs. This may include medication management, therapy-informed support, and when appropriate, lifestyle and wellness strategies that can improve your overall functioning. Because of my dual background, I am able to approach treatment with a broader clinical perspective, ensuring nothing important is overlooked. Follow-up sessions are focused on how you are actually feeling and functioning, not just symptom checklists. We review your progress, address any concerns, and make thoughtful adjustments to your care so it continues to work for you over time. My goal is to provide care that feels connected, thorough, and effective, helping you achieve not just symptom relief, but long-term stability and a better quality of life.

Shelly is great, she really listens, understands what I’m going through, and is helping me make real progress with my anxiety and panic attacks.
I booked an appointment, received the confirmation from Zocdoc, completed all of the tasks, and prepared for the visit as instructed through Zocdoc. However, the doctor never reached out to me. I called her office several times and left messages explaining that I never received an email with a link for my Zoom appointment. I never received a callback, email, or anything.
