Getting to know Dr. Sigalit Hoffman

Dr. Hoffman graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Faculty of Health Sciences in 2006. She completed her residency in Psychiatry and a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Tufts Medical Center. She practices in Cambridge, MA, and one other location, specializing in Adolescent Medicine, Psychiatry, and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have extensive psychopharmacology and psychotherapy experience, and feel comfortable providing combined treatment as needed. I am DBT informed, and have worked in several DBT settings. I am certified in Prolonged Exposure, which is an evidence based trauma treatment. Most of the psychotherapy I do is psychodynamic psychotherapy. I am a kind person, and believe strongly in having an open and honest relationship with patients. I try to strike a balance between communicating in compassionately and being direct. I use a lot of humor in my sessions, and love to establish a relationship that is collaborative , and mutually respectful. I am a naturally curious person who loves meeting new people and working with people from diverse backgrounds. I am fascinated by the way one's culture of origin can impact one's outlook on the world and one's self perception. I have practiced medicine overseas, and in various under-resourced countries, which was a tremendously enriching experience.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

For adult patients, I will start with a 50 minute intake during which I will take an extensive medical, psychiatric, and education history, as relevant. After the initial information gathering appointment, I will share my diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations, including medication options, psychotherapy modality, and education interventions (as appropriate). We will decide how to move forward depending on their individual needs. For my child and adolescent patients, I will usually have an initial sessions with the parents only, during which I will gather medical, psychiatric and educational history, and review any prior records, including academic or psychological assessments. I will then meet with the child, and share my recommendations with the family. I have extensive experience working with schools, and complex families. I am happy to provide guidance around educational advocacy, and managing contentious family relationships.
