Simin Berend, MSN

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
CA
I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner providing virtual psychiatric care to adults throughout California. I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma-related concerns, life transitions, and other mental health challenges. My approach is warm, collaborative, and evidence-based. I believe medication can be an important tool, but it is only one part of mental health care. I take time to understand the bigger picture, including your symptoms, experiences, relationships, lifestyle, and goals, so we can develop a treatment plan that feels thoughtful and individualized. My background in both psychiatric nursing and mental health care has shaped a practical, compassionate approach to treatment. I value open communication and shared decision-making, and I want you to understand the reasoning behind treatment recommendations rather than simply being told what to do.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting psychiatric care can feel intimidating, especially if it is your first time seeking mental health treatment. My goal is to create a space where you can speak openly, ask questions, and feel actively involved in your care. I tend to have a warm and conversational style while still being thorough. I want to understand not only what symptoms you are experiencing, but also how they are affecting your day-to-day life and what you would actually like to change. I view treatment as a collaboration. We’ll discuss options together, including potential benefits, risks, and alternatives, and decide on a plan that makes sense for you. I incorporate supportive therapy into appointments when appropriate and may also discuss sleep, stress, routines, relationships, and other factors that can affect mental health. You do not need to have everything figured out before your first appointment. We can start with what has been going on and work from there.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. We’ll talk about what brings you to treatment, your current symptoms and concerns, medical and psychiatric history, medications, sleep, substance use, relationships, stressors, and other factors that may be affecting your mental health. From there, we’ll discuss my clinical impressions and develop an individualized treatment plan together. Depending on your needs, treatment may include medication, supportive therapy, lifestyle strategies, additional evaluation, or coordination with other healthcare professionals. Follow-up appointments focus on how you are doing, whether treatment is helping, any side effects or new concerns, and whether adjustments are needed. I also want to understand how you are functioning in everyday life, not simply whether a symptom checklist has improved. My goal is to use the lowest effective amount of medication when medication is appropriate, while regularly reassessing whether each part of your treatment continues to be useful.
