Getting to know Sommer Perkins
Hello, and welcome. I’m Sommer Perkins, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specializing in psychiatric medication management. I work with adults and adolescents experiencing ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, sleep difficulties, and other mental health concerns.
I understand that reaching out for mental health care can feel difficult, especially if you have struggled for a long time or have not felt fully heard by previous providers. My goal is to create a comfortable, respectful environment where you can be open about what you are experiencing without feeling judged. I take the time to understand not only your symptoms, but how they are affecting your relationships, work, daily life, and overall well-being.
My approach to medication management is collaborative, thoughtful, and individualized. I believe treatment decisions should be made with you, not for you. Medication is not always the answer, but when it is appropriate, I generally favor a careful “low and slow” approach, making changes thoughtfully while considering your goals, preferences, response to treatment, and potential side effects. I want you to understand your options and feel confident in the decisions we make together.
I also believe mental health treatment is about more than a prescription. When appropriate, I encourage an integrated approach that may include therapy, behavioral strategies, healthy lifestyle changes, and other supports.
I began my career as a registered nurse and later earned my Master of Science in Nursing from Nova Southeastern University, specializing in Family Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, graduating with honors.

What should a new client know about working with you?
New clients can expect a collaborative, thoughtful, and supportive approach to psychiatric medication management. I prioritize creating a comfortable, nonjudgmental environment where you can feel heard, respected, and able to openly discuss your concerns.
Our visits are not simply about checking symptoms or writing a prescription. I take time to understand what you are experiencing, how it is affecting your daily life, and what you hope to improve. Treatment decisions are made together, with your goals, preferences, and comfort taken into consideration.
When medication is appropriate, I approach treatment carefully and intentionally, discussing potential benefits, risks, side effects, and alternatives so you can make informed decisions about your care. I believe in respecting each person's autonomy and avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach.
My goal is to help you develop a treatment plan that feels manageable, individualized, and sustainable, while taking into account the whole person rather than focusing only on a diagnosis or individual symptoms.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
Every new client begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to understand your mental health history, current concerns, symptoms, previous treatment, medications, and personal goals. This allows me to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
I specialize in psychiatric medication management for conditions including ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, panic disorder, sleep difficulties, and behavioral concerns related to ADHD or autism.
If we determine that it would be helpful as part of your treatment, I can also incorporate supportive talk therapy into our visits. Therapy will not necessarily be part of every appointment, but when appropriate, I provide a safe space where you can talk openly, feel heard, and have a voice in what you are experiencing and working through. I may provide support, validation, coping strategies, problem-solving, and therapeutic guidance based on your individual needs.
For clients seeking an ADHD evaluation, I also offer computerized ADHD/ADD testing as an accessible and convenient option. Testing can be completed quickly, with results available immediately, and may provide additional objective information as part of the diagnostic process.
Follow-up visits focus on your response to treatment, changes in symptoms and functioning, medication effectiveness and tolerability, and any concerns or side effects. When appropriate, we may make thoughtful medication adjustments, discuss behavioral and lifestyle strategies, and coordinate care with your therapist or other healthcare providers.
My goal is to provide thoughtful, individualized care while ensuring you remain an active participant in your treatment.

I've had so many providers dismiss how I actually feel and what management is best for me. Sommer is amazing! She is professional, caring and thourough. You can see that she cares about her patients well-being and autonomy. I feel she wants me to feel my best while giving me accurate and honest information on the safest and best treatment. Anytime there is an issue with a pharmacy or medication she follows up very quickly and I am never left wondering what to do. I had gone through a long period of trying to explain to my previous prescriber what I felt was going on without being heard and Sommer truly heard me, trusted that I knew what I was experiencing and supported me in coming up with a plan on how to move forward.
