Getting to know Dr. Stacy Berrin

Dr. Stacy Berrin's passion for her work is unparalleled. She cares deeply about her clients and is committed to helping them find ways to lead their healthiest, happiest lives. She helps her clients navigate difficult situations, develop better relationship skills, foster a love for themselves and others, and cultivate a sustainable inner sense of peace. Dr. Berrin runs her own private practice and serves the New York community by offering online video consultations. She addresses both serious mental health disorders and more temporary issues related to the self-such as worry, self-esteem, life transitions, and health concerns-as well as challenges involving others, including partners, family members, and coworkers. She works with individuals of all ages, as well as couples and families. Dr. Berrin earned her Ph.D. in Psychology with a focus in neuropsychology from the City University of New York (CUNY). She also holds a Master's degree in Psychology from CUNY and a Master's in Counseling from The College of New Rochelle. She is a member of the New York State Psychological Association and has many years of experience working in New York City hospitals and family homeless shelters.

What should a new client know about working with you?

This is what you can expect: 1. I tend to give my clients an entire hour session rather than 45 minutes - unless shorter is preferred. I also try my best to be fully present, loving, and nonjudgmental. All clients - really all people - deserve someone in their life who can be there for them in this way. 2. With rare exception, I work only in the mornings and early afternoons. If weekdays don't work for you, I have some weekend availability. 3. I work with clients on both a short term or long term basis. Whenever you want to discontinue our sessions, there should be no reluctance to tell me. 4. Even when I'm traveling I do my best to keep your regular appointment. This is the beauty of video appointments.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I have found the best results with a cognitive approach. When we discuss certain situations which have resulted in your sadness, anger, or hurt - or unwanted behaviors, we will explore your underlying perspective. You will come to experience that by changing your perspective, your feelings and behaviors change as well. This is the ultimate freedom because regardless of what comes your way in this world, you are in charge of your thoughts - and you can therefore learn to be happy with regard to ANY situation - or be more empowered to change your behavior - or the situation - to the degree possible. This may sound bizarre, but I have found it to be true in my life and in the lives of my longterm clients. It is a skill that can be learned and a philosophy of life which leads to more peace and joy- regardless of the cards you've been dealt. You won't always be happy - but you will always know it is possible in a moment, if you want it. Sadness, grief, anger, worry, anxiety - these things are fine. But you will find yourself choosing not to stay in those states as often - and not lashing out at others - or yourself through self-sabotage. And when you do feel these things or go back to old behaviors, you will - over time - know how to find "the way out" so there is no need to add despair on top of it. If this sounds like what you are looking for, I look forward to getting to know you and taking this journey together.
