What should a new client know about working with you?

As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I provide medication management rooted in evidence-based practice and genuine partnership. My philosophy begins with a simple but important recognition: every person behind a diagnosis carries their own story, experiences, and goals — and that story matters enormously to how we approach your care. Our work together starts with a comprehensive evaluation. I set aside meaningful time to understand your current mental health symptoms — when they began, how severe they are, what tends to ease or intensify them, and how they're impacting your daily life. We'll review your psychiatric history, including prior treatments and how you responded to each of them. I'll also cover your medical background, active medications, family mental health history, and your present life circumstances. To ensure we're tracking progress accurately and objectively, I use standardized rating scales that provide a consistent measure of your symptoms over time. Patient education is central to how I practice. When we explore medication options, I explain how each one works, what the evidence supports, realistic timelines for seeing results, side effects to watch for, and what ongoing monitoring involves. My prescribing approach follows current evidence while honoring the fact that no two patients respond identically. I favor first-line treatments with strong research support, start at appropriate doses, and track your response carefully through regular follow-ups before making any changes. I'm intentional about adding medications, doing so only when there's a clear and sustained clinical purpose, and I reassess each prescription regularly to confirm it's still earning its place in your plan. Affordability, insurance, and dosing convenience are always considered. Between appointments, I'm available for questions and encourage you to reach out promptly rather than waiting — early communication makes for better care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our initial session, I create space for you to share what's really going on—not just symptoms, but how you're experiencing life right now. I'll ask about your current difficulties, their duration and severity, and their impact on work, relationships, self-care, and activities you enjoy. We'll discuss your health history, past psychiatric treatment experiences (both positive and negative), current medications and supplements, substance use, and family history. I approach diagnosis thoughtfully and collaboratively. Mental health conditions can overlap and present differently in each person, so I avoid rushing to labels. Instead, I gather comprehensive information and share my clinical impressions with you, explaining the reasoning behind my assessment. If you disagree or if something doesn't feel accurate, I want to hear that. Diagnosis guides treatment, but it doesn't define you. When we discuss medication options, I prioritize education. I'll explain how specific medications address your particular symptoms, what the research shows, typical timelines for noticing benefits, and potential side effects specific to each option. We'll consider your preferences, lifestyle, past experiences, and any concerns about starting medication. This is your decision, and I'm here to provide the information you need to choose wisely. Ongoing management involves regular monitoring and open communication. Initially, we'll meet every few weeks to track your response, adjust dosing if needed, and address any issues that arise. As symptoms improve and medication stabilizes, we can meet less frequently. Each visit, I assess symptom changes, side effects, medication adherence, and overall functioning and quality of life. I genuinely care about your well-being and progress. I'm not just prescribing medication—I'm invested in helping you feel like yourself again, manage your condition long-term, and build a life that feels meaningful to you.
