Getting to know Stephanie Patrick-Calvillo

Hello, I'm Stephanie Patrick-Calvillo, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). I work as a Nurse Practitioner at Mental Health Practitioners, where I provide compassionate, evidence-based mental health care through comprehensive psychiatric assessment, medication management, and collaborative treatment planning. With 18 years of healthcare experience, I have served diverse patient populations in inpatient psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment facilities, and outpatient clinics. I earned my PMHNP certification from Maryville University, my Master of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain University, and my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (with honors) from Eastern New Mexico University. I am certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. My clinical expertise encompasses serious mental illness, mood and anxiety disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, personality disorders, psychotic disorders, and geriatric mental health conditions including Alzheimer's and dementia. I have completed specialized certification training in management, personality disorders, and geriatric mental health. My approach to patient care is rooted in empathy, respect, and partnership. I believe effective treatment begins with listening to each patient's story and developing a treatment plan that aligns with their values and goals. I provide thorough diagnostic interviews, medication management, and ongoing follow-up care while educating patients about diagnoses and treatment options. I have extensive experience with individuals who have experienced trauma, those navigating life transitions, and patients with co-occurring conditions. I am committed to culturally competent care. Whether you are seeking help for the first time or need ongoing medication management, I am here to support your mental health journey in a safe, nonjudgmental space where you feel heard and empowered.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Please note: I do not accept EAP programs. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I offer medication management rooted in evidence-based practice and a true partnership with each person I serve. My philosophy begins with a simple yet essential truth: behind every diagnosis is a person with their own story, experiences, and goals, and that story plays a major role in shaping your care. Our work starts with a thorough evaluation. I'll take the time to understand your current symptoms, including when they began, how intense they are, what tends to help or worsen them, and how they're affecting your everyday life. We'll go over your psychiatric history, including past treatments and how you responded to each one, as well as your medical history, current medications, family mental health history, and present life circumstances. I also use standardized rating scales to measure your symptoms consistently and objectively over time. The better I understand your full picture from the beginning, the more accurately I can create a treatment plan that's designed specifically for you. Education is at the heart of my practice. As we consider medication options together, I'll explain how each one works, what the research shows, realistic timelines for improvement, which side effects to watch for, and what ongoing follow-up will look like. I prefer well-established first-line treatments, start at appropriate doses, and closely monitor your response before making any changes. I'm thoughtful about adding new medications and only do so when there's a clear clinical reason. I also review each prescription regularly to make sure it still has a place in your plan. Between visits, I'm available to answer questions and encourage you to reach out early, because timely communication leads to better care. You deserve thoughtful, knowledgeable support that respects your journey and helps you move toward meaningful healing and lasting well-being.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Please note: I do not accept EAP programs. In our first session, I make space for you to share what's really going on, not just your symptoms but how you're experiencing life right now. I'll ask about your current difficulties, how long they've lasted, how severe they feel, and how they affect your work, relationships, self-care, and the activities you enjoy. We'll also review your health history, past psychiatric treatment, current medications and supplements, substance use, and family mental health history. I approach diagnosis thoughtfully and collaboratively. Mental health conditions can overlap and look different in each person, so I avoid rushing to labels or conclusions. Instead, I gather a complete picture, share my clinical impressions with you, and clearly explain the reasoning behind my assessment. If medication is a good fit, I'll explain how specific options target your symptoms, what the research supports, typical timelines for noticing benefits, and possible side effects. We'll talk through your preferences, lifestyle, past medication experiences, and any concerns you have about starting treatment, so the decision is one we make together. Ongoing medication management involves regular monitoring and open communication. Early on, we'll meet every few weeks to track your response closely, adjust dosing if needed, and address anything that comes up. As your symptoms improve and your medication stabilizes, visits typically shift to monthly. At each appointment, I'll assess changes in your symptoms, side effects, how consistently you're able to take your medication, and your overall functioning and quality of life. I genuinely care about your wellbeing and progress. My role goes beyond prescribing; I'm invested in helping you feel like yourself again, manage your condition effectively over the long term, and build a life that feels meaningful to you. Throughout our work, I want you to feel like a respected, informed partner in your care.
